interesting quote on NHL.com - http://www.nhl.com/ice/ne...47&navid=mod-rr-headlines

"Peter wants to have a relationship with his captain like he did with Rod Brind'Amour in Carolina," the ex-Flyer player said. "Mike just isn't that type of guy."

At first glance I thought Philly's front office lost their damn minds. Then when I thought about all the variables at play and what they actually got in return I think it worked out well for them. Richards obviously has some baggage and wanted out. Simmonds, Schenn, and Voracek should be good additions plus some picks. I think the locker room will be stronger and they were able to sign a goalie they think is the answer. Sucks to lose your captain top PKer and a pp guy though. Good move IMO.

ok defend the deals..

How are Simmonds, Schenn and Voracek going to be better than Carter and Richards?

Bryz could have been signed via other routes like Steeg etc traded...

You can come in here and make fun of the moves but if we get what we expect out of those guys we will be tough to play against

Issues like consistency have plagued the team for the past 6 years... even through 3 different coaches. Carter and Richards were here for, and possibly a contributing cause.

It was known that there was a bit of a divide in the locker room. Richards was not the vocalist this team needed. He is a hell of a leader, but leads more by example.

The emergance of Claude Giroux, and development of JvR made the decision easier as well. Giroux is the man now. JvR is the Carter to Giroux's Richards. They got a lot younger up front, added size, and hell of a lot of cap room.

Everyone loves Cole but from what I've seen, his play is borderline reckless.. which is why he is so injury prone. Cole will cost 3mill.. why not go after a skilled LW 30 goal scorer like Marco Sturm who is UFA and would cost a little more than Cole at around 3.5 mill ? Or cheaper LW options like Fleischmann, Miettinen or even Samsonov(who had a stellar past season!). Or solidify the weakened center position with a guy like Laich who would cost 3 mill or less.

I was very high on Versteeg when he came here, loved his play in Chicago and Toronto, but he's been a bust here in my eyes. I know he had a sports hernia and was playing thru that injury but I just think his 3 mill could be better spent on Sturm or any of the above mentioned UFA's.

- MrBigglesworth

Sturm has major durability issues and he's been on the decline for the past few years. LA waived him last season, partly due to salary, but it also had to do with how far his game has fallen off. He used to be a weapon just based on his blazing speed, but these days he's just another smallish forward with some skill that is decent in his own zone -- or in other words, Andreas Nodl.

Versteeg's a good player, and w/ Richie gone, he's going to have to pick up some special teams slack. They could still offload him to FLA to possibly make room for Leino, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it go either way.

What seems pretty clear now is that Homer is trying to get out of that corner he painted himself into w/ all the big contracts and offloading of youth/picks. Throwing money around at aging vets like Sturm/Cole/etc is not the kind of investment the Flyers need to be making during the summer. You can always add one of those old-timers at the deadline and it won't cost you much.

Bryzgalov has a playoff career save % of .917 and GAA of 2.55.

Price has a career playoff career save % of .907 and GAA of 2.84... while having a much better team in front of him...
