And they can't discuss an extension with either player until July 1. Their value on the trade market is no where near their value on the ice.

Although I understand the rights with a NMC, if a GM/Pres approach you to say we'd prefer to move you and have no plans to offer you an extension...wouldn't you want to leave? What an awkward way to finish your final year! If I'm in that situation I'd probably discreetly work out a deal. Go somewhere where I'm wanted. Try to have a big year and earn your next contract. It's like going to a high school party and someone says "oh I didn't invite you". Super fun.

Precisely why they need to tell Tavares to move on.

They gave him money, the captaincy and 6 years of his prime to get it done.

He didn't get it done.

Offer him to pick where he wants to go for 1 year and to come back as a UFA next year at 5 million or less if he can still be a 20 goal, 60 point center.

After seeing all those videos of his dad ripping into him for a "bad game" as a 7 year old I am not surprised he can't handle being ripped for it by fans and the media.

Just like Tavares was the first big name UFA to sign in Toronto in his prime, he can be the first to waive his NMC and come back the next year for half the price.
