shame too. They're a different team if he's on, especially against the Pens |

If the Flyers bring back Filppula, I may lose my mind. He was abysmal. Glad Hexy acquired him and helped Yzerman out of cap hell though. I look forward to the Lightning returning the favor soon. |

I expect Simmonds to be moved and his health really don't have a lot to do with it.
Hextall has to know that he isn't re-signing him. And Imo he also has a pretty good idea that this team won't likely be in sell mode at the next deadline. Now is the time to get something of value for him. Or you hang on to him next year when you're still at the very least a goalie away from seriously competing. |

Last summer was the time to do it.
Now I hold onto him for next year, don’t resign him until we get another full year of evaluation on our big forward prospects. We have quite a few |

He wasn’t great but there were just no other options to throw at 3C this year if they insisted on giroux on the wing |

Pretty much. 3C needs to be addressed this offseason as does starting goalie. Guys like Couturier and Provorov deserve better than what we had at those spots this season.
I agree with Hextall’s overall philosophy of draft and develop but if you don’t want to risk your good players getting frustrated you need to also make some other moves.
This team isn’t that far from being one that can win a couple rounds, provided a couple of smart moves can be made. The GM needs to make them. |

agree right now manning is better than Gudas, dont want either, while Manning is a good 6-7, Hak will use him as a 4-5 - wcorvette
Hakstol won't if the young defenseman play to a higher level.

Pretty much exactly how I feel. However, I don't see Hextall doing anything with the goaltending. I don't see how he doesn't address 3C. |

Solid acquistion by Hextall. Filppula filled and role and helped the team greatly. Unfortunately he declined as a player faster than hoped. He took on a lot of heavy lifting for the team and helped them bring along Patrick slower. Without Filppula and the effect it had on the team, I doubt the Flyers make the playoffs this season.

Hard to understand the thought that Hextall has to know he isn't re-signing him. What is that based on?

3C has to be addressed. It’s going to be a multi year deal. There are no in house options

Great blog Bill. Thanks for your quality work.
I think Hexy is doing it right. Building through the draft and clearing up cap space is where we are now. The fact that we are able to compete in the playoffs is a bonus. As the young core matures and our older core still can play important roles then you start to acquire talent through the market and trading some assets.
Us fans are just to impaitiant and this train of thought can strap a team down.
I think management has made many good calls so far (and a few bad ones I can admit) but I can see the build coming. Hexy will pull the trigger when we get in shot range of a cup run. |

Agreed. Flip played an important role at the time. He was expensive but we are looking in better cap space moving forward. Hey may not have a role moving forward at his price. He will stay in the NHL but will take a salary hit for sure. |
