Ryan Wilson: Make a go at Pageau?
Make a go at Pageau? - Ryan_Wilson
Not sure what the cost would be to get Pag from Dorion. I always thought a 2nd round would be suffice. That’s what they got for Curtis Lazar last season.
Pag is a fan favourite, but struggles with consistency (unless he plays the Habs – always good vs the Habs)). He will give you one game a year (usually in the playoffs) where he looks like Wayne Gretzky. The other 95% of the time he is pretty invisible. He’s an effective penalty killer.
If the Pens are looking for additional scoring, look elsewhere. If they are looking for a 3rd line PK guy who will likely come up big in the playoffs once or twice, then he’s a good fit.

Well, someone will have to do it after Hornqvist moves on. |

That is a perfect description.
Read it twice. It's exactly what he is.
Super nice guy. But streaky even with good people around him. |

If he can keep up with Phil and get him the puck he will do just fine. |

Everybody would, but the cost goes way up. Plus, we'd probably need them to eat some contract making the price even steeper.
I'd be fine with Pags for a reasonable price. |

There’s two sides to the Pageau aquasition that need to be considered.
1 is as mentioned the cost of aquasition as already mentioned. We don’t have any roster players with value that I’d be willing to give up for JGP (who I’ve actually thought would look great in a Penguins sweater every time we play against Ottawa). Maybe Simon, but the cap difference is so stark it would give me pause. If the cost to acquire JGP is something like Sheary or Rust or someone, I’d rather just roll G at 3C.
2. Is making the cap work. If it’s a mid pick and an unspectacular prospect in our system (which is what I think is a good price), the cap needs to work out since we have sub 1 mil cap space. Would Ottawa take Cole for no reason? That’s what it would take.
Man it would be awesome if Ottawa for whatever reason was just in love with Hunwick. |

Maybe I just don’t get it sometimes (I’m sure that will get highlighted with a thumbs up), but if advanced stats are so good at evaluating a player, why are they also reflective of the team they’re on?
I could be wrong, but my assumption of advanced stats are they’re intented to evaluate a player individually and independent of his surroundings. If the team they’re on affects that then doesn’t that make the advanced stats irrelevant? |

Advanced stats are numbers that need to be evaluated within context. Most anti-analytics people for some reason insist that the numbers in a vaccume are taken as bible by the people who use them. That’s not the case unless you’re like Tanner or someone.
The relative numbers (which measure your scores against your teammate’s scores) are a red flag for JGP, but as RW also noted, JGP is often saddled with really bad line mates, which will affect your relative possession just as negatively as your raw possession.
There’s a certain amount of risk that will come with acquiring Pageau, but if the Pens are totally out on running G at 3C this season an aggressively pursuing UFAs in the offseason, then this is the type of guy we have the assets to acquire |

I guess I worry because this was the same argument with Sheahan; his stats were bad but people said it’s because he was on a bad team, but he’s basically the same as he was in DET. Playing with higher-end talent didn’t improve his game.
From an eye test you can clearly see that Pag is far more talented and possesses far more skill than Sheahan, but that doesn’t always translate into succeess.
I guess if I’m JR I’m making sure I bring a proven legit player with no question marks, like Brassard. |

Well Pageau would be an upgrade on the current situation... I see him as about equivalent to Sheehan. If you can get him for a 2nd rounder and still have assets to bring in a guy like Pac it would be pretty solid. |

He's a Kunitz type. Would be awessome to have a young Kunitz on the team. |

I like Jake at 3C when there’s no other option; he’s far better than Sheahan in that role, but long-term I think the Pens are better off looking for a true Center. |

Sheahan has been much better than he was in Detroit.
I'll agree on Pageau, seems like a risky investment of cap space. The Pens have earned a certain amount of leeway on reclamation projects though.
Sidebar, these are the type of blogs from RW that I like where he breaks down a player I don't follow closely that we may aquire. |

One thing I hope they look into is buying low in Ho-Sang. Weight just ripped him in the media and he is a healthy scratch in the AHL but the talent is definitely there. Isles probably wouldn't want to trade in division however, especially considering they are in a battle for a playoff spot with the Pens... maybe offseason.

Montreal is about to rebuild, so I think it’s foolish for anyone to say who they’re not moving. They’re openly stating they’re rebuilding, so you can pretty much assume anyone is available for the right price. |

I don't know about that. I haven't been all that impressed with JG's defensive work at center. Beyond that, I don't think he has a point at center either.
Where I think they benefit is (like tojo said), it lengthens the lineup. We literally go from a 3 line team to a 4 line time......which is essential. |
