Jim Rutherford is the most honest, straight-forward GM I've ever seen. I actually think he says "waaaaay to much" all of the time. If he's saying there's no truth to this report, believe it.

I'd prefer he keep his mouth shut most of the time when talking about this stuff. Reporters in Pittsburgh are actually shocked with how candid he is.

Disagree.

He gets better as the deals get closer and he is usually the first one to know about it when it comes out of the fax machine at the league office, for sure.

As far as the more formative, early on stuff, he is not really any better than anyone else.

- John Jaeckel

Haha sarcasm, it's rare he's wrong when he say's something gonna happen.

For every "see I told you so" scenario JJ can come up with like the nill/sharp scenario, we can come up with a 100 on the other side

It's not a solid point imo

- Ihateallofu

Sorry, I have neither the time nor the energy to go back through GM denials that turned into true stories.

You're wrong on this.

But evidently, your anecdotal logic is somehow more valid than what you see as mine. We dealt with someone who went off like this in here yesterday.

JJ, don't sweat the fools who want to shoot the messenger. You do a good job of sharing what you can when you can. And, you do a thoughtful job of trying to connect the dots, as you like to say. And hey, opinions are what they are and yours tend to be well constructed.

One thing that had me thinking, is that if I was going to put together a trade for a customer, I would get as far into any discussions I could about a separate trade, so if I needed some leverage negotiating the trade I wanted, I could say... I like this deal the best, but I've also talked with Pitt about a separate deal... and then we could work on price. Maybe all the Malkin thing is just that. A different trade you can use as leverage to get the one you actually want, at the price you want.

Could be anything, nothing, or something. But it sure is a fun diversion, so thanks for what you do.

Ok devils advocate - humour me.

Hawks are in cap hell or on the hotstove (see what I did there? ) at least. What if this rumour is true but it's a straight swap for Kane. (Doubt 66 would ever let that happen). Similar salaries for both teams, both scorers & regardless of what Kane did on the ice he has a colourful resume off it.

So would Geno for Kane work?

JJ got anything on the rumor front? Also what is the domino piece now that we know the cap? Thanks and great write up as always.

OK, but I also seriously doubt at this point he'd tell anyone they were talking Geno with another team.

Please don't tell me every move Rutherford makes is transparent and the press is made aware of it. It's not.

Please.

JJ,
Would you take that trade if you were Bowman? Being, Malkin for AA and Kruger. It would take more wouldn't it?
- BURDA13

You'd have to think.
-JJ

No. To make that trade work from a cap perspective, you'd have to trade Crawford, and you'd have no room to sign Shaw.

So to consider this proposed swap, the deal would be Add Malkin, give up AA, Krug, Shaw and Craw. That make any sense?

Fine piece of writing, as always, JJ.

I heard that Malkin was looking at elbow surgery that might keep him out 6-9 months. Putting aside how effective he'll be when he comes back, that much salary on LTIR could give his team some cap flexibility for a good portion of the season ....

it would. the thing is IF you were trading toews or kane would you be alright with krugr and AA for either of them if the opposite team had krugr and aa?
- martox

Certainly not. And AA & Kruger for Malkin is also way too low. But to counter with Keith and Panarin is rediculous. The truth is somewhere in between.

In either case, even the Cap Wizard, Bowman, would have a heck of a time fitting Malkin into our group....not impossible....but much more would be in play. Like a separate Crawford deal. Nice to speculate. But, likelihood of Malkin being a Hawk at training camp are still pretty damn low.

This is a little ehhhhh cynical? But sure, there's some truth to it as well.

But I will also tell you, when you hear form someone who works with the people involved, who've provided good info may times before, and they have no reason to lie to you, it's just that simple. Especially when it's independently corroborated by two other people on other cities.

- John Jaeckel

I posted a few times.
Which did you quote?

Anyways, cynical ? How so?
The rumour mill is wrong so much more than right, it's anything but cynical. More like rational I'd say.

I can read an 'insider' from another town/team and just know his words or information is flat out bs.
Buddy attempts to use a little logic because of some common knowledge, but came up with some rumours that don't help your team at all. The deal is "possible" of course, but it's not "plausible"
Yes, the oilers need defence, but they're not dealing hall for an unproven 3rd pairing kid and a draft pick.

I'm not calling you a liar, but this info is total bs. We either all know it, or none of us do. In which case The gm wanted us to know said info.

Unless you're implying your buddy is leaking private info? How long till the gm figures out who it was you think? A week ?
Or are you implying every discussion is formatted in an email and sent out en masse to janitors and scouts alike?

The logic of it all really isn't rocket science

It comes down to plausible scenarios. And anyone can figure these out.
Yes, there are some scenarios where malkin could move. But at present, there's no reason to believe a word of it.
And Mackenzie and Rutherford commenting on it as untrue is the real ender. To try and claim those guys are lying or incorrect is actually fairly disingenuous actually

That's what I was saying: would take more than Kruger and AA.

I wouldn't be shocked if the actual story went like this:

"Hey Stan, there's a rumor that Malkin wants out of Pittsburgh, and one place he would like to play is Chicago"

Bowman - "Man, Malkin would look great in a Hawks sweater, hell, I'd give up AA and Kruger, among others for him. Let me give JR a call"

"Hey JR, are the rumors true that Malkin is looking for a trade??"

JR - "nope"

End of conversation

Did you just claim that insider rumours coming true are as prevalent as gm denials being proven false ?

Is this a joke ?

There's nothing anecdotal about it all. It's not even close. In fact, my 100 number was just a nice round number I threw out there. It's more like 1000 to 1.

Maybe I misunderstanding your retort here ...

You must be related to Eklund Make up BS and pass it on. Malkin loves Pittsburgh as do his parents and Pittsburgh loves them as well. Why would you want to go to Chicago one of the most violent cities in America If I lived in CHicago I would be looking to escape
- holeinone

Aside from a post that really adds nothing, it is one of the most attractive and cleanest cities in the United States FWIW.

GMs deny stuff that turns out to be valid . . . all . . . the . . .time. Not gonna debate it. Good luck recruiting support for your POV.
