The guy in the backpack looks a little to old to be Vesey.

Googled, you're right. Suggestion is it looks more like prospect Charlie McAvoy who is in Buffalo for the draft weekend. http://assets.ngin.com/at...iles/5772/7642/McAvoy.jpg

Is Soupy still a solid puck mover? Haven't seen him play in a while. If he comes cheap I'd say do it if he adds offense, especially 5 on 5. This team will need depth scoring from anywhere it can get it.
- bhawks2241

He skated 22:00+ a game, put up 31 points, paired with Ekblad on the 1st rotation, played all 82 games and was a +31 last year!!

He looked close to the same as he always did. He hasn't slowed much at all.

Hey JJ, just curious why you don't feel that Campbell can slot back into D4 next to Hammer? It appears you like TVR and Kempny better and I was just wondering why. Not arguing...just looking for your reasoning.
- onehundredlevel

IF they were inclined and able to bring Campbell in, then he and Kempny are your left side guys on the second and third pair. Which plays with Hammer and which with TVR, I can't say for sure.

I know they are high on Kempny.

And to no fault of Rutherford or any GM / team official in any sport.

They can't tip their hand(s). They screw up any leverage they could have had if they opened up about anything. Why is this so damned difficult for some people to understand?

I might be off, but I thought someone indicated Shaw was looking for $3M+/year. What type of return would the Hawks hope to get if they trade his RFA rights before the draft?

I'm a little perplexed regarding the Hossa recapture penalty - or to be more precise, what's all the angst about? Unless I'm mistaken, the Hawks will have Hossa's $5.2M cap hit on the books until the contract expires in 2021 (or whatever year it is). They will have the cap hit whether he is playing with the team or he has retired. Therefore the cap recapture thing should not be a factor in the decision to trade him or not. The only thing that the decision should be based on is whether he can still play and contribute to the team. When it gets to the point where he can't contribute any more - there is no cap impact whether you trade him or he retires or you keep him on the roster as the 14th forward - the cap impact will be the same whether it's called cap hit or recapture penalty.
- EbonyRaptor

It's number of dollars 'Hawks benefitted from earlier on, divided by number of years left after retirement or trade.

Cap hit $5.275M.

Salaries each yr: 7.9 the first 7yrs, 4.0, then 1.0 last 4 yrs.

If he left (not LTIR'd) now last 5yrs recapture would be:

(7.9-5.275)*7/5=3.625

Say he plays three more years, last 2yrs recapture would be:

[(7.9-5.275)*7+(4-5.275)*1+(1-5.275)*2]/2=4.275

That's how I interpreted the recapture rule.

Shaw has very little actual bargaining power once he hits RFA status. The hawks could always just give him a qualifying offer of the exact same salary as last season (2.5m) and he has to take it or sit the season. Not saying they will do that, but they could in a pinch.

what about giving Campbell a 4 year 4.8 mil contract with AAV 1.2 salary structure as 1.4, 1.4, 1.4 .7.and with 1/2 the money coming as a signing bonus the idea he plays 2 years in Chicago and retires before the start of 18/19 season after the gets a $700k bonus of July 1. he would be collecting 3.5 Mil over 2 years and it would all be cap compliant I think. give him a Limited NTC that he can pick 2 team he can be traded to so Vegas would not want him. Heck if Vegas takes him he could collect the bonus of .7 and he would have gotten 2.1 for 1 year.

Given that, what should they expect to get back if they have no intention of meeting his "demands"?

I dont know the exact math, but I've seen it discussed here over the past 2 years and always mentioned as $4m+. So your numbers look about right.

Solid 4C moving forward.

Hopefully Krugs is ready to bounce back and perform as the 3C.

I would guess a 2nd-3rd round draft pick or a young mid-level prospect. He's a role player here, but doesn't offer a ton more than that to other clubs. But I'm no expert.

@ChrisKuc just tweeted (more smoke for the fire): Source says Brian Campbell has serious interest in returning to #Blackhawks. Defenseman would have to agree to discounted contract.

Would love to see Soupy back at a discount -- provided Q will deploy him...

- Marlowe

Love it! Can he be had for sub-$2M? Second pairing with Hammer.

Much, much better defence.....for the money.

OK, a 4th line piece who Q is comfortable with likely at or close to league minimum.

Good enuff for me. TVR can be third pair AND on the RH side.

I was warming up to Soupy in 2010, the point he got hurt. I also saw a bit of what the 'Hawks did not have in games 1-3 of the first round while he was still out. And THAT before Hammer rounded into one of the best pure defencive defencemen in the entire league.

Soupy --- and here we go again --- is an enabler to fortify the defence in a cost effective manner: It takes pressure off Kempny and TVR to be in any second pairing role AND allows TVR to stay on the right side.

He is over 35, if he retires we still have his cap hit (see Datsyuk).
