If Malkin ends up in Chicago I would have to think there is a 3rd team involved. A team that will take on salary to help them get to the floor.

The Blues better push hard for Malkin. Can't let Chicago get him.

Oh my, Malkin and Tarasenko on the same line.....

- carcus

Have always said that if Malkin wanted out and the Pens decided to trade him, the Blues would be the best destination.

Fabbri or Barbashev and Schmaltz would be at the starting point of the deal

I'm a little perplexed regarding the Hossa recapture penalty - or to be more precise, what's all the angst about? Unless I'm mistaken, the Hawks will have Hossa's $5.2M cap hit on the books until the contract expires in 2021 (or whatever year it is). They will have the cap hit whether he is playing with the team or he has retired. Therefore the cap recapture thing should not be a factor in the decision to trade him or not. The only thing that the decision should be based on is whether he can still play and contribute to the team. When it gets to the point where he can't contribute any more - there is no cap impact whether you trade him or he retires or you keep him on the roster as the 14th forward - the cap impact will be the same whether it's called cap hit or recapture penalty.
- EbonyRaptor

Unless he gets injured, in which case LTIR and comes off the cap.
Or unless there is another compliance buyout in the near future (mentioned as part of expansion draft).
Or unless the Hawks can figure out some other way around this problem...which they can't do if he's not their property.

So you can see that having him on the team keeps options open for Hawks. Trading him kills all these options.

Eklund wrote that the price for MAF is too high for Calgary. Will they take a number on Crawford? That proposed deal yesterday would work. Would free about $3M in cap.

I'd like to reiterate, (frank) the NHL for that.
- JRoenick97

Eh, it was cap circumvention, and against the rules now. So it is justified.
- CAP1681

Eh, I can see how a Pens fan would view it that way. But the facts:
1. It was NOT against the rules when the deal was signed.
2. The deal was approved by the NHL.
3. After the fact, in the next CBA, they added this cap circumvention rule in a retroactive manner against several contracts, including this Hossa one.

So I'd hope you'd see how Hawks fans can feel a little "Franked" by the NHL on that.

- Cmonalready

I get all the anger about it. But don't forget, the rule was put in place in the 2013 CBA - The players and owners agreed to it.

I did not agree with the "inciteful" vs. "insightful" confusion. Too very very similar meanings indeed
- DeflatedPucks

Thanks for pointing out my error. Meant "insightful" which the comments were.

Embarrassing for someone who has previously taught English.

I don't want to give up Fabbri.

Barbashev and Schmaltz + would be ok with me.

Would have to have some salary going the other way too though to make it work.

What about next year when Panarin won't be an 800k contract?

Or this year when a short term injury happens and you need to get another player or two on the roster?

- carcus

Carry over bonus lessens by close to 1.5 million next year when scuderi and rozival+teravainen hits are off. Gaustad would be a 1 year deal, campbell is on a one year deal. could shorten the martin deal to 1 year and squeeze another penny there.

Short term injury would be rough depending on the player, but there is a touch over 600k to play with. Thats including gustafsson on the top roster so there is a short term d-man, baun could be brought up on offense (not ideal but he is there)

Considering we ended up with 3 cups because of it, it's not the worst thing in the world.

Gotta be a roster player or two going the other way as well.

Shattenkirk+Barbashev+Schmaltz?

tough pill to swallow but it makes it work cap wise i'd think?

But the one year deals would have to be replaced as well if they are gone. There wouldn't be room to sign Panarin next year.

No not justified it was perfectly within the rules at the time. The NHL ALLOWED the contract to happen (they could have stepped in like they did Kovy) so to make up a rule after the fact is asinine.

Wideman has fallen out of favor over there. Maybe a move to the Windy City could invigorate him. Provided CGY retains like 50% of his salary. Does he still have anything left? I haven't watched him enough.

I believe it stays with the team. I was hoping to find an official explanation.

If and when you do can you please post? Not sure how the Wings can move Datsyuk's contract when he went back to the motherland when the Hawks couldn't if Hossa did the same........ Did they they sign them at different ages?

Was he a good fit in the "room"? I remember an interview with Toews after the STL series, saying the team needed to do a better job of integrating new personalities. Was Dale one of them?
- phantasmo

I never heard anything negative about him regarding how he was in the locker room.

Datsyuk's contract isn't anchored with a recapture penalty that the league imposed after the fact. They can move it all they want. It's easier to think of the recapture as not tied to Hossa at all, but a fine the league handed out for the contract.

Two 2nd rounders, prospects, F Mikael Backlund (salary is around $3.5M?) I might have been off on the cap savings.

He looked to be slowing down from the games I saw. His salary is a good $6M
I agree that if they retain salary ($3-3.5M) it may be worth a shot.

Wideman will have trouble finding a new team...There was no excuse for the hit on the linesman and then he basically lied about it...Not coming here.

Splitting hairs, perhaps nitpicking, possibly angels in the head of a pin, but how can you "fine" an entity for an act that was 100% legal (in accordance with the CBA) at the time - and so judged by the same league that is now fining if?

This is a recapture penalty, legally (if unfairly) instituted in a new CBA.

Either way, it certainly has the potential to screw up future Blackhawk plans.
