Convenient echo chamber fantasy facts. Not surprising.

A large percentage of the guns purchased legally that are involved in Chicago murders are purchased in nearby Indiana—where gun laws are lax.

I own numerous firearms. Grew up shooting. Have lived in Chicago and Pittsburgh (and many other cities).

The whole Chicago violence, anti-gun control narrative is so flawed it's laughable.

- John Jaeckel

Faux News Whorehouse? Hole is a bit behind the "curve". Safer in Chicago, New York or LA than Pittsburgh but those facts don't find their way to The Whorehouse.

Not the same

Malkin wants out (supposedly). Keith does not
Malkin could end up in Russia at any moment. Keith will retire in the NHL
Malkin makes almost twice of what Keith makes
Malkin is his teams 2nd line center. Keith is arguably the greatest all around D-man in the world

Pittsburgh could trade Malkin and maybe not feel the effects so bad...get huge cap relief, a couple prospects and could easily fill a line 2 center role (maybe not as good, but the improvements elsewhere could make up for it)...

while trading Keith would probably signal the end of the Hawks run as there would be no way a reciprocal value could be had from moving Keith. The chances of "somewhat" replacing his value to the Hawks is remote.

It's just not the same.

Ok, I will try not to take this seriously

(and what about the fact that Malkin is #2 because a guy named Sid is #1)
and Malkin is 29

Another GM who always tells the truth:

From a current piece on tsn.com (Frank Seravalli)

"Can the Oilers find a top-four defenceman?

Despite the rhetoric from Avalanche GM Joe Sakic, there is belief the Oilers have not given up on the possibility of prying Tyson Barrie out of Colorado. Barrie, a 24-year-old restricted free agent, is exactly what the Oilers need in a right-shooting, puck-moving blue liner

Sakic told the Denver Post last week “either way

- John Jaeckel[Barrie] will be here” when the season opens in October, whether through arbitration or a new long-term deal, but he also said the same thing last summer when talking about Ryan O’Reilly. Sakic said on June 18, 2015 that O’Reilly was the team’s “first priority” and the goal was to get a long-term deal done before the start of training camp. O’Reilly was traded to Buffalo eight days later, on the eve of the draft."

I don't doubt that Rutherford is forthright.

I do know of trades and situations involving him in CAR that were not made public til very late.

I also suspect if they were talking about Malkin it's not something he's comfortable going out with right now. Because of the kind of reaction this engendered yesterday.

Like every GM in the league, Rutherford is just an employee with a senior title and position. He can be hired and fired. If he knows Mario got tanked on cheap Merlot and booted Malkin's dog in the ass after MAF let in a bad goal he's going to pull the Sgt Schultz "I hear nothing/I see nothing routine".

That's what all GM's do - act as camaflouge and play dumb.

IMO and as been noted here by others-- simple math and the cap tell the story that it is highly doubtful the Hawks are trying to acquire Malkin--- Hawks have enough issues to contend with than Malkin--

If I recall there was another team mentioned in the initial rumor-- that he would waive to Chicago AND St Louis--

To me its all a non starter-- unless Rutherford is trying to play off Chicago against St Louis-- and adding leverage to his process--

Giant smokescreen that benefits those actually making deals and distracts everyone--

BUT who can say that they didn't have a conversation among other things-- isn't that what has been reported-- kicking the tires--

- jb3333

I agree that is true unless there is a much bigger deal being considered that makes more sense and people just can't fathom at the moment. For Chicago, acquiring Malkin and his salary just compounds an already bad salary structure there.

Pittsburgh could only benefit in moving Malkin by shedding salary, something that contrary to opinion is not a major issue at the moment. Many more reasonable and sensible ways to get a little more cap room than trading a super star for less in return.

That said, if we know this, then who's BSing who?

Are people on this board really that incompetent in their thinking that "GM's don't lie"?

When people want to keep something secret, they have ways; such as lying or sending out misinformation. I'm sure JJ and others with people "in the know" can tell when they are being fed legit info versus something that is being sent out for another purpose.

I've been an NFL fan my entire life and follow their draft religiously and EVERY YEAR you hear, "Top 10 player X is falling down people's boards because of a medical issue". GM's in EVERY SPORT, especially those with salary caps, put out false information all the time; on the players they like in the draft, in trades, in UFA signings, etc. In the cap era, money is key and if you can get the player you want for less $$$$, it's advantageous.

If StanBo even heard a rumor that Malkin wants out of Pittsburgh and mentioned Chicago as a possibility, StanBo has a DUTY to call Pittsburgh to find out what the price is. It could be a quick conversation, like "What's the price for Malkin? 4 and 72? Ok, thanks. Have a nice day."

For all anyone knows, after the parade, Malkin may have told Rutherford "Hey look, I need a change of scenery and with my NMC, Chicago and St. Louis are the teams, right now, I'd move to."

As far as swapping Kane for Malkin, IMHO the PR would be a disaster AT THIS POINT. He won the Ross, will win the Hart, has kept his nose clean so far this unfortunately long offseason, and is saying all the right things. If you were going to move him, right after South Bend would have been the time to do it. Right now the backlash in sending the reigning 27 year old MVP for almost anyone would be high. The hockey people would have a hard time justifying this to the paying customer.

I think the Pens go out and get a veteran back up to split time with Murray if MAF is moved. Guys in the ilk of Khudoben, Enroth, or Montoya.
- cap1681

Agreed. Murray looks like a keeper but has yet to get through the grind of the regular season.

Nobody on the Hawks blog knows who you are referring to when you mention "Sid". He is referred to as "Cindy" here. Just trying to help you out.

And I absolutely agree referring to Malkin as a "#2" is unfair. He's the #1 on the majority of teams in the NHL.

JJ, I have read your contributions here for a long time....and for the most part you have been an excellent read.

Please help me with this...the Malkin to everywhere rumor hits at seasons end every year (usually it's to LA). And every year nothing. Here, as a Penguin fan, is to hoping this is more of the same.

Tagged to this yearly rumor is that Geno has a desire to be "The Man" and that is the largest reason to leave. He has always said Pittsburgh reminds him of home. The Org. is good to him. It is obvious the fans love him.

The question...How does Chicago fit any of that?

With Kane and Toews there he would be less "The Man" than in Pittsburgh.

Besides...(and I'm asking you to be the Pens GM here)... What's fiar return for Geno?

Thanks for reading.

Fair points, buddy, appreciate the kind words.

If I were Bowman, off the top of my head, I might offer:

Anisimov
Kruger
Nick Schmaltz
Rights to Shaw

Anisimov and Kruger are useful players. Shaw is a winner. Schmaltz looks like a nice two-way top 6 guy.

Or I do Kane for Geno straight up. Seriously.

So gut feeling:

Crawford on roster at start of season?
Shaw on roster at start of season?
Campbell on roster at start of season?
Malkin on roster at start of season?

I say yes on Crawford,
No on Shaw,
Yes on Campbell,
No on Malkin.

I say Bowman goes young at forward with our Rockford guys and sticks with keeping our two time winning cup goalie and upgrading our top four defense...and try to win it that way. You never know...maybe he makes a deal or two at trade deadline to add a veteran forward.

Bud. I'm sure if there was a rumor on the Pens portion of this site that mentioned Kane or Toews being mention in trade talks to Pittsburgh, the Hawks fans would be all over there as well, and why not? People just having discussion about it (for the most part) so why does it matter on who's blog it's on? Good God indeed.

Thats fine.. but some are in here getting testy over the thought of Malkin leaving and Chicago could be a place where he wants to go. I think Malkin is a fabulous talent and would love to have him here, but not at the expense of gutting what little depth we have right now.

Wonder if Q will do the same? Especially if his guy Shaw is shipped out. Curious to see what goes on in Q's brain IF Shaw is dealt.

I dont do any of that and continue plugging away at the Euro and college and FA market to find value and focus on drafting.

Malkin guts the depth and the pipeline further for the foreseeable future

If Wilson posted that JR called Bowman, AFTER rumors were out there that Kane or Toews might want out, and he mentioned say Hornqvist and Daley as part of a possible return, I imagine SOME Hawk fans would overreact.

I think a lot of us would be like just "Wha'?"

Speaking for myself, I'd ask him personally what he'd heard, and then talk to my sources.

But I don't go out on Twitter and jack up people who've gone out of their way to help me in the past.

Todays NHL Entry Draft he will be there for the Blackhawks
"Elephant in the Room:"

Sean Day

Here's this huge defender, was granted exceptional status so he could play in the OHL a year before the kids in his birth year.
He's not Buff in size but around 240-250 and a hair over 6' 2"
Strong
Really good all around skater
Balanced
Strong shot.

I am sure you can search the internet and find plenty of negatives on him by yourself, but here is the one I wrote:

http://www.draftsite.com/...hl/player/sean-day/22430/

This guy hasn't figured the on ice things out, makes plenty of poor decisions and if he maybe hasn't fully commiyed to his STEELHEAD TEAM AND TEAMMATES TO PLAY ALL OUT THERE, when does that change? In Rockford? In Chicago?

Still after I rip him, I still keep wondering, at some point is he a player?

He'll just slide 53 into a 65 jersey and rename him Mashawinter . He'll be on the PP and 1LW . And the Q will be happy.
