Because he has a No movement clause. And it sounds like the nhl is forcing teams to protect players with nmc's.
Same goes for bozak and lupul....?

I read an article that teams are pushing to make some amendments, but as of today I think they have to protect them

If ference can't pass a physical this offseason, with the rules today, I recently read the oilers can't buyout ference and have to protect him even though his contract/nmc expires ten days after the expansion draft
