lets see 4th overall +24th overall this year. lets say Strome and Carlo.
next year likely top 10. lets say Logan Brown

2019-2020 season, Nylander is 23,C. Brown 23, Hanifin 22, L. Brown 21, JVR 27, plus whatever we get for Kessel

thats a good core

Conversation starts with Galchenyuk. Probably ends there too from Montreal's perspective.

I think it ends even before you have the time to ask for a specific player

Agreed, but just saying if they had Kessel this post season I think the team looks a lot better

Realistically I think they need another top pairing defenceman, they have good prospects to fill out 3-7. They need one of their goalies to wake up and act like a real goaltender, or they need two new goalies. It gets a little dicey at forward. Nylander is the only prospect with legit top line potential in my opinion. Some real good prospects, but nothing stellar. Then you need to factor in guys like JVR and Kadri. Do they stay or go?
- BetterCallSaul

Forwards

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri -
Panik - Komarov - Holland
Bailey-

Defense

Phaneuf - Rielly
Gardiner - Polak
Robidas - Erixon

So it looks something like this if everybody walks?

I'd like for them to keep Panik and Holland, but honestly the only player I see sticking around for the long haul is Rielly. Maybe JVR.

Of course not. The Habs don't need scoring help at all.

Probably not. Division rival deals get expensive, like the poster said earlier.

I would be ok with trading jvr to be honest.

I think he takes more nights off than Kessel. Might change with a better team but I'd be curious what flyers fans said of him before he was traded. (Other than schenn + for him)

Habs need offense, but not Kessel. I would be very surprised if they got a forward making more than 5M. Pax makes 4.5M, they certainly won't get Kessel at 8M, especially if they sign Petry.
Now JVR on the other hand...

I look at that and I don't see a team that needs a rebuild they just need a few pieces. They need a number 1 centre, a number 1 defenseman, a top 4 defenseman, a goalie, a new leader and a few minor pieces.

Rielly is likely going to be that number 1. A top 4 can be signed, Franson mentioned he was interested. Goalie could be Bernier and Neuvirth or Enroth. The number 1 centre is damn near impossible to acquire and if you strip the C from Phaneuf he needs to be traded.

Which forward will you get at 5 mil that will net potentially a point a game? Yes, I am assuming this past season was an anomaly for Kessel.

No, that's not a bad deal at all. Isles fans will probably hate it, but I don't believe it to be unbalanced.
- BetterCallSaul

That's a milbury deal for the isles. Horrible.
