first if he got 40 then no it wouldn't... 2nd if your not going to read the context in which i said that first then don't comment - DarcyTucker16
I got the context of your post, regardless if Clarkson scored 50g in 1yr would still be a bad contract bc of age and length, which doesn't guaranty him producing after a 1yr wonder, didn't the Leafs sign him off a career year?? which he might not duplicate again, and I like Clarkson just not the contract, so don't defend it.. |

so this was essentially the phone call?
Dean: Hello?
Nonis: Hey Dean its the Toronto Maple Leafs.... are you looking to trade Mike Richards?
Dean: Yes, he's making over 5 million and not performing. I'd take an offer for him.
Nonis: Great, then I have an offer for you... how about Clarkson for Richards
Dean: Wait a minute, I tell you I want to trade Richards because he's a 5+ million dollar guy who isnt playing well and your solution is to trade me Clarkson, a 5 million dollar guy who isn't playing well?

Nonis: Hello?
Really Ek? - SuperHenderson13
They have to take $$ back and most likely another bad contract if they want to move Richards. Oherwise, they will pay him 5 millions in the AHL.

Really, Leafs, Clarkson? Not anybody's fault but your own that you gave clarkson that dumb contract. What a joke - RobitailleFAN20
Yeah, that is almost as funny as LA wanting Gardiner.... for a guy your team can't give away for nothing.
Now THAT is funny.
Hey... maybe Nonis should see if he can get Kopitar in return for Phaneuf!

It actually goes:
Nonis: hey, I know you guys need a taker for Richards and if you have no other options we can swap David Clarkson. Bad contract for bad contract but at least Clarkson can play more minutes and other roles. For us maybe Richards benefits from a change of scenery and fights for a top 6 role. What do you think?
Dean: while there is a chance that deal benefits us what we need is a defenseman. How about Jake Gardiner? He is being destroyed by the Leafs media so obviously an overpaid 4th line center for a young defenseman who hasn't fully developed yet is totally fair.

Dean: damn, wasn't even close.
Well maybe that call went a little bit my way and a little bit your way.

Im guessing it would be Richards +(retaining salary) + prospect and possibly + pick

Scott Cullen made a mention of it too, smart guy
http://bit.ly/tsnrichards0127 - RobitailleFAN20
Elliotte Friedman said Dion.
Edit: That's probably where EK got it from. That's not a rumour, that is Scott Cullen coming up with his own trade proposals.
That's like me saying Kopitar for Robidas, then EK saying a source told him Kopitar for Robidas, then you saying, stupid Leafs offering Robidas for Kopitar. |

I said he "mentions" his name. I never said that was an actual trade offer. |

Actually it goes more like this:
Nonis: "Hello, Dave Nonis here..hockey team extraordinaire"
Burger King Manager: "Hi Dave, Ralph from Burger King again. We have Phil here, he's passed out drunk in a pile of soggy cheeseburgers again. Can you send someone to come get him?"
Nonis: "Sure Ralph, sorry about that." |

At this point it would likely be the only way to trade Richards. I wouldn't target Gardiner if I was LA especially if they are retaining salary and are giving up big pieces.
That being said, the Leafs shouldn't even consider moving Gardiner for Richards even if they retained 35-50%, gave a prospect like Kempe/McKeown with a 1st/2nd. The only way that deal is good for the Leafs is if Richards bounces back and becomes a consistent 2nd liner which is a gamble they can't make with their cap where it is.
Another team like Edmonton who needs veteran depth at center or a cap floor team who wants to take a chance on Richards at $3M and pick up a few assets for a piece they can afford to lose. (Richards' contract was front loaded so a 50% retained contract has very low cash paid compared to his cap). |

There was no way whatsoever any NHL team would've taken Mike Richards with his level of play and contract. |
