I think everyone is living in NHL with the cap off, either that or they play every game and only use the top 2 lines.

People don't get it, trading sutter, maatta and our first will destroy our depth on offense just to make our team yet again a 2 trick pony. And with martin/hoff maybe both walking, we will have only 6-7 dmen, most being rookies

PASS

- znagle

That is exactly right. You also put something in this post that many people forget ... Martin and Ehrhoff are pending free agents. This is an easy pass.

Yeah and Hall is younger than Nash so I'd bet he'd pull in more - and at the time of the trade Erixon was a top notch prospect so it just goes to show that if your trading a star its a lot better to get sure things than prospects.
- DirtyDozen

Also Nash had a NTC who would waive to only a few teams, plus Hall has a really nice cap hit on a long term contract. The team that trades for Hall (if traded) its not like they are getting a player who will be there for a couple seasons. His Age, length of contract, etc, they are getting a dynamic winger who will be entering his prime and could be apart of his new team for 10 years.

Its not garbage but its not the gamble the Oilers should be taking. Maatta and Harrington are nice D Prospects/young players but unproven in term of being a consistent Top 4 NHL defencemen, same as Sutter, having one hell of a year but is he the solution to their 2C need long term? Or he is really just a 3C long term.

Hall is the more proven commodity in this case, and if the Oil move him, it for sure is going to be be for players that have little to no risk involved with them

Honestly, I just don't see Edmonton pulling the trigger on any significant move; they just don't have the balls to do anything. Their management will talk big, do nothing & they'll continue to suck.

They truly do remind me of the Pirates during the 1990's and 2000's. Their inability to make any progress has just been staggering. How can you suck that much for that long, draft that high, & still be that bad? Like the Pirates for abour 20 seasons, it just doesn't seem possible. Even if the end up with McDavid, they will STILL have no D and no G, likely leading to another lottery pick.

Honestly, I can sympathize how it must be harder to attract free agents to Edmonton due to the weather & city. But Edmonton's issues do not stem from a lack of quality free agents; they are monstly self-inflicted wounds via incompetence.

He's only played one year and put up 29 points? That is your rationale? He was a rookie Dman last year, not Sven Baerschi, a forward superstar prospect like Calgary fans continue to say. Maatta, who I'm totally against trading, would be your most competent defenseman on that roster and its not close.

You realize that third line center would be fifth on your team in total points and third, one goal behind Nuge and Taylor Hall in goals this year. It's not like Sutter is playing with former first overall picks and other young first round players with him. Bennett doesn't count. He can't stay on the ice. Sutter has more value than you are giving him credit.

- Oneonta Penguin

Firstly, you're implying that im an Oilers fan...i'm not. Second - there are a number of players/prospects that don't pan out - like i said Maata could potentially become a phenomenal player but Hall already is there. You're trading potential for a player that is already one of the best in the league at his position which i do not think is a good move.

Sutter is what he is - i dont think it matters if he'd be fifth on the oilers in points as a lot of third line centres around the league would be it doesnt change the fact that what the Oilers really need is a strong second line C. Not a borderline 2/3C - he's a defensively responsible 25 year old C who has career highs of 32 and 40 pts. I'm not saying he's a bad player im saying he isn't going to solve the oilers problems at 2C.

So, it's essentially "slightly less than the return for Jordan Staal for Taylor Hall"? So Staal for Hall?

Ok then.

- ScienceJesus

That Staal trade was highway robbery for Shero, and is hard to compare to other trades... It's also sorta why Rutherford scares me in the trade department.

Pretty sure an evolved Sutter is more valuable than when the Pens got him. He's a much different and better player now. Maatta has way more value than Pouliot. The first is probably better value than Dumoulin.

I dont get the comparison..

Yep, everyone sees it as we can upgrade sutter to hall by losing maatta and a first! Deal! What they don't realize is that we are taking on an extra 3 million in that trade, losing depth on offense to be a two trick pony again, and also losing an ELC contract for a top 4 dman. Say we lose martin and hoff, half our defense are rookies. But our rookies are the best! We haven't seen them in the bigs, plus we don't have any more depth at d at all. No depth at D, no depth at O. Right, all three have value well increased. Dumo is legit, Pouliot appears to be, and Sutter is a good third line center (people need to stop with the best 3rd line center crap I'd still take Coots out of philly). That is what happens when you trade for top talent.

Sit this battle out GMJR. We don't have what it takes to land hall.

Agreed - Oil have to get something crazy back to make it worthwhile.

I think Florida is one of the few teams that have the pieces they could move to make it happen...

Do we really want Goc (40gp, 4 pts with us) as our third center? C'mon people, we have all said that we need three lines to win the cup. This is a top 9 league, not top 6 with a team of 4th liners and AHL journeyman to fill out the rest.

Only thing I want out of EDM is perron, as long as it's not for sutter

Myers, Ennis, Buffalo's 1st.

That is likely the least of what Edmonton would want, which is why he won't be traded, unless the price comes down.

Yeah, what happens when martin and possibly hoff both walk?

What happens in the playoffs when our top 2 lines get shut out? Ring a bell? Oh yeah our awesome bottom 6 will be able to put points on the board! There is no guarantee dupuis is back or kap/sundqist make the team next year. I'm sure goc can create for himself playing with zach sill and downie on the third line. He has 4 points in 40 games with us. Yeah he's a legit 3c

- znagle

Oh yea, I'm sure Hall-Crosby-Hornqvist-Malkin-Kunitz will get shut out in the playoffs.

Hall is a long term answer. Its about this year and next year, sure. Its also about the next 6 years when Kunitz/Dupuis are retired.

You can't just handpick Sill and put him on the third line to make a point. ..I listed like 12 players for the bottom 6, none of them named Sill, let alone on the third line. Totally moot point.

You are also assuming both Ehrhoff and Martin walk. Just a lot of biased assumptions here...

I agree too, Florida would be my best guess of a potential trade partner.
I dont think he gets moved anywhere in the West, that would hurt the Oilers having to try and face Hall battling for a playoff spot down the road.

Didn't our two trick pony get shut out a few times in the playoffs the past few years?

I said sill because that's basically the talent that will be bottom 6 minus downie. Goc has 40 gp 4 p with us don't kid yourself, spaling is not that good, not that bad. Just kind of exists

The proposal I was responding to was a suggestion of Sutter, Maatta and (1 of) Dumo/Harrington (I'm picking Dumo just because he was the piece in the Staal trade & to make the comparison work). This is essentially the same as the return for Staal. Only major difference is Maatta instead of Pouliot but both were drafted within a few spots of each other & are both D-men similarly regarded by the organization.

Yes, all of those pieces have appreciated in value since the time of the trade, but they're still essentially the same assets with increased value. Therefore, it's still essentially Staal for Hall.

This was not a 100% serious post. Just an amusing (to me) connection that I was pointing out.

It's essentially Maatta for Hall. Yikes!

Sutter - Checking Centre that doesn't put up points. I'd give you Purcell for him

Harrington - He was good in Junior right?

The 1st means nothing really.

- nanook82

LMAO and that is why the Oilers are destined for continued futility..... sometimes you don't hold the cards and have to make a deal just to shake things up.

You're getting a proven 3/4 20 year old Dman in Maatta

A solid Defensive Center, which after giving up 3+ goals a game, looks like you need some forwards who want to play D and not just TRY and score.

Scott Harrington and Brian Dumoulin would be everyday starters in Edmonton... just because they can't crack a stacked Penguins line up doesn't mean they aren't NHL ready.

But hey... what do we pens fans know about continued stability and success.

I dont think he gets moved period and i dont think florida would want to trade Ekblad Huberdeau and a pick or whatever it would take to get him. Ekblad Barkov maybe? Or Huberdeau Barkov Gudbranson...who knows the combinations are endless but either way it'd cost a fortune.

I dont think you should ever make a trade that includes an elite player just to shake things up.

You make those kind of trades with complimentary players maybe not one of the top 3 LWers in the game at age 23.
