What are you basing this statement on?

Was wondering the same thing, we haven't even seen him yet ?

I call BS

Rutherford almost traded Neal for PA Parenteau and Colorado's 1st, so he could then package our first and the Colorado first and send it to Nashville for #11 so he could pick Kaspari Kapanen

The net result of the Neal trade was ALMOST Parenteau (who was practically given away a month later) and Kapanen, and thats it

GMJR sucks and I don't trust him, look at the hot mess Carolina is in only 1 year removed....

Yeah, let's bash a guy for moves that he never made...

Exactly, it's like getting pissed at a goalie for not stopping the shots that hit the post.

Let's just wait and see what happens with Fleury... We can pretty much all agree that he's here for the rest of the season, so let's just see how it plays out

I'd like to think Griess can step in next season or win the job this year, but that's putting the cart way before the horse. I want to see him play some games against some good teams first.

Fleury is really a complicated situation.

If he somehow plays good in the playoffs and doesnt go fishing behind the net, he will want a raise on top of a big salary that is not compatible with his play.

If he sucks, JR will let him walk and there's no one good out there either. So we will have to pray Greiss is indeed ready to be a starter.

If Greiss is not good and Fleury plays like poop in the playoffs...

What this guy said...

I wonder what MAF's reputation around the league is? Do teams see him as a good goalie playing in a loose system causing him to be exposed or do they see him as the enigmatic head-case that has been the main reason a talented team has underachieved?

My opinion on him is the same as everyone elses. I don't trust him one bit.

However, I keep going back to game 7 vs Detroit in 2009. When the chips were down, on the road, facing a superior opponent, he played the game of his life. It was MAF, Staal, Kennedy, and Talbot that won that series.

So, its in there somewhere and that's tough to let go of.

Greiss looks like hes ready to make the jump from backup to starter... if he'd get a (frank)ing chance

The goalie graveyard is littered with guys who looked ready to make the jump.

MAF is the best option out there, this topic has been beaten to death, revived; urinated on, beaten again; given a turd in a hot dog bun happily ate it, then shot in the back of the head on its last bite.

That's what I meant. He's no back up in this league as well.

Based on what MAF will want a raise? If anything he should be glad mngmt gave him their trust even when things didn't look good for him. I don't buy the "he will price himself out of Pittsburgh" thing.

$4M sounds good for 3 years. Time to get a hometown discount otherwise SU*K it MAF.

Niemi, Reimer for $3-3.5M would look OK, having Greiss to battle for a starting spot.

Ryan Wilson: Jim Rutherford Says Fleury Is His Guy. Is He Really?
- Ryan_Wilson

What is he suppose to say?

Nope, not my guy, don't want him around next year?

I suspect the Pens will look for a cheaper option to give them a little cap flex.

Someone posted this on twitter yesterday... it's hard to see, but if you click it, it is larger:

Outside of a few guys (Rask, Lundqvist, a healthy Rinne,), there aren't many guys who I'd take ahead of Fleury, but there also are plenty of guys who could fill his role if he is gone.

Right now in the NHL, there are a bunch of goalies who are just "meh", and depending on how they are playing at a given time, can either win or lose you a game. Everyone seems to have their question marks.

My issue with Fleury going forward is his cap hit. You never see guys still in their prime age range that take a paycut from their current team as a pending free agent. I'd be fine with Fleury at $4 million, but in all reality, he's going to get more than $5 mil if he resigns here, right? In actual salary, he's making $5.75 mil this season. Barring a playoff meltdown, he's not going to take that big of a haircut to stay here. And if he does have a playoff meltdown, no way he comes back.

there was a bit of a sour grapes blog. GMJR certainly wasn't going to say he wasn't in the pens plans, but he way over did it in his response otherwise. I am on record on this blog as saying MAF gets a general bad rap by many on here, including the blogger. I think he is a bit better than average. but I also agree he is overpaid. As a supporter of MAF I am not sure he should be back. what he has working for him is a bad goalie market next year, much fan support (excluding blogisphere) increased cap flexability next year. I believe the pens sign him, for better or worse. and it could cdertainly be a lot worse. <-- MAF Teeth

You guys ever think that maybe Fleury doesn't want to sign yet? Look at it from his shoes. He has everything to gain by proving his struggles are behind him.

Just a thought.

He will definately get a raise. caps going up and he is the only legitimate starter UFA. a hometown discount would be 2 years 12 mil. not saying the pens should pay that, but someone will pay him that or more longer term

This could be true... and with a new, offensive minded coach, a couple trusted d-men leaving, maybe he was the one who took a wait and see approach. If he or his agent thought that this season could be filled with wide open games where he could be getting hung out to dry on a nightly basis, waiting to see how things go might not be a bad idea.

This...Big surprise Ryan makes a blog bashing MAF, but there is no alternative mentioned. Greiss has played like 30 NHL games, I am not expecting much there. There aren't many other goalies available and at what price would they be to bring on? No body is trading for MAF and giving us a better option in return. He is the G for this year, maybe the following years if he signs cheap. Then again who else is available and at what price?

The days of the Roy's, Belfour's, Brodeur in his prime, Hasek, where a goalie could carry a team through the playoffs are over.

This.
I dont get the thought process of taking GMJR's comments and twisting them(if he was really our guy he would be signed). Rather than reading too much between the lines, the simpler explanation would be that Rutherford does want Fleury going forward as he said, but just not at his current cap hit.

I just want to say that the Flyers are absolutely screwed tonight. They will lose, possibly by 5 or more. No, they will not "goon it up" because aside from Rinaldo, they don't have a "goon" any more than Pittsburgh has Steve Downie. This game will be very, VERY satisfying for the Penguins. My wife will be very happy watching this game.

I feel sorry for the Flower. He is an easy target for taking the heat for the Pens problems. I personally wouldn't sign him to a long term deal, since he isn't a playoff goalie of choice for me. He seems to show signs of being a quality goalie, but falls short when it counts. He reminds me of an early Price, but Price was able to overcome his psychological challenges. I would even compare him to Romo of the Dallas Cowboys; he maybe good, but isn't great.
That being said, who do they have to turn to if they don't sign him? Do they have anyone in the minors that could fill his shoes? If so, why did they sign Greiss?
I realize that being a Flyers fan that I am one to talk about goal tending, but I was curious about life after "The Flower."
Thanks.

I don't know what to expect... coming off a loss for the Flyers (and some days off for the Pens), this could be lopsided either way. Flyers could be mad and Pens start slow, or the Flyers could continue to be bad... You can usually throw out the records when two rivals play, and this game is no exception.

No way, Bottom 6 players should have 20g ea and be paid less than a million.

I don't know if you've watched the Flyers this season. Even if they play to the best of their abilities (which is laughable to expect), they just do not possess a talented roster. Individually they have talent, but the mix does not work. They will get picked apart in their own zone tonight.
