Pierre Lebrun of ESPN had some interesting quotes regarding current starting goaltender Marc Andre Fleury:

"As long as I'm GM here, he's my goalie," Rutherford told ESPN.com. "My plan is to re-sign him when the time is right. When that is, I don’t know, if it’s during the year or after the year, but I do want to re-sign him. I believe in him."

That's well and good, but if he truly felt this strong about the goaltender he would already have a shiny new contract. Actions speak louder than words.

So far his actions were to sign a backup goaltender with the best save percentage looking to become a starter for the first time.

I'll believe the Penguins are committed long term to Fleury when I see it.

For now, Rutherford gave the only answer he could feasibly give. He has absolutely nothing to gain by saying that Fleury is not in their plans.

When constructing a roster in the salary cap era you cannot afford to fall in love with average. Fleury is average (at best). Don't fall in love with that.
