Greene can be the rock that all the youth coming depend on. He'd be a great leader for not only the big 3 playing this year, but also I feel a player like Severson who I am sure will play at least 10-15 games when Salvador goes down. When it comes to who I want my defensemen to look up to, Greene is a solid guy for the price tag. I'm hoping it is in that 4 year range as that gets Larsson, Gelinas, Merrill and even Severson get to their mid 20s and then guys like Santini and maybe someone like Jacobs will be starting their careers. |

Greene is an invaluable piece of this team right now, and he probably will be our #1 dman for at least the next two years. I'd say that, along with Jagr and Schneider, he's one of the few players we cannot afford to lose to injury this year. Losing other players would hurt, but not like losing those three would.
This'll be interesting to see what he gets. Lou is good at so many things as a gm, but he's so bad when it comes to this. As much as I want him back, I don't want to see him on a 7 or 8 year deal. 5 years is the most I'd be ok with, and I'd rather see 3 or 4. I'm not too concerned with the cap hit. |

Todd Cordell: What is Andy Greene Worth? - Todd.Cordell
Tough one. There a lot of variables here. He is one of my favorite players on the team, not a big guy but plays smart positional hockey and puts the puck in the right spots, Greene is the man. Andy will be a great role model for the kids, he's got that workman type lunchbox appeal Pete and Lou are always mentioning. With Sal's $ coming off the cap, and the boys coming through, I wouldn't be upset with anywhere in the 5.5-6 mill per / 5+ year range, which puts him at 36-37. He isn't real physical and seems to be well conditioned so I think he will be capable for several more years. He has always been under rated and isn't a flashy player who also seems to like the Devils organization so maybe Lou will get a deal. |

This aspect of a gm's and agents job is a chess game, the what if's must be such a mind(frank). These negotiations are particularly difficult when a player is at this age and in Andy's situation. Less term more money, more term less money. The Devils built Andy coming through as an undrafted player he has really built his career here. Lou was usually a hard ass on the money side and then Clowe. It will be interesting to see how it pans out. |

Same contract as Girardi sounds about right. 6 year 33m (5.5m cap hit).
He would be leaving money on the table if he went to UFA, but its a fair deal to both sides. |

He's had seasons of 30+ pts & seasons where he didn't crack 20. He's had last season with 8G and a season with 1G.
His value to NJ is more than it would be on the market to another team, but then again players are overpaid left & right.
That said, due to inexperience of most of NJ's d-corp he's the man of the yard & NJ will have to pay to keep him.

That would be an awesome deal for greene - shvingter88
Wouldn't it be better to lock him up longer than 4 years depending on how Larsson does? Gives you more buffer time for him to develop.
Your D next season is going to be interesting, no one really locked up after this season, so you can rebuild a big chunk of it through UFA or trade.
A lot of decent names of UFAs. Green, Martin, Franson, Staal, Ehrhoff, Michalek, Oduya, Boychuk, Petry, Methot |

It would hurt if Larsson doesn't developed as planned but our success won't hinge on that both Merrill and gelinas proved they could be studs for periods of time and likely all three have the talent to potentially be number two guys |

I wasn't sure about your young D guys, all outside fans really know about is Larsson. What are Merrill and Gelinas games like? |

Merrill has a lot of potential as a good 2-way defenseman. He didn't show the offensive potential he has in the AHL or college, but last year was his first professional season and he was given tougher minutes than Larsson or Gelinas so maybe that was just him adjusting to the game. The coaches seem to trust him most out of the 3. Gelinas has one of the hardest shots I've seen, and has the most offensive potential out of them. That said, after a good start, he became a train wreck defensively. It wasn't even him being picked on as a rookie, just a lot of dumb decisions and unforced errors. Right now he's basically power play specialist. |

Merrill was called up for the first time last year and is now pretty much a lock on the 1st D pairing, along with Greene, which on a defensive team like the Devils, should say a lot. He has excellent hockey IQ and an offensive upside, I personally think he is going to be a key player for years to come, possibly even a real star.
Gelinas has a huge offensive upside, he has a powerful shot and had top tier NHL PP numbers last year for D. He does however need to work defensive prowess and positional play and needs to grow into his big body a little, but also has a lot of potential.
Behind those two are Severson, who you might see a taste of this year and Santini behind him which both have a lot of potential.

Hamhuis is (frank)ing solid. |

At the end of the day it really doesn't matter what he's worth.
The Devils should (And I believe will) offer him something between 5.2-5.7 on a four or five year deal. If he wants to stay he'll stay.
If he hits the open market (where he will get as much as 6; See Niskanen) then he's going to leave. The Devils will not get into a bidding war over him. Nor should they, given their defensive depth.
If he leaves, there's plenty of defenseman available. I believe someone already went through the first tier.
Second tier includes Oduya, Hejda, Braun, Bartkowski, Franson, Martinez.....plenty less than terrible options to choose from.
They should try to get him signed. And they should. I think that was a big part of letting Mark Fayne go.
but if they don't there are plenty of contingency's |

He got a lot of money based on potential, because his production wasn't consistent enough to warrant it. |

so those Carter and Gelinas characters. They're kind of important.
But WHO AM I to question the great Lou!? He's probably sealing a trade as I type! |

Carter is interesting but gelinas doesn't have much choice being a RFA with no arbitration. I wonder if carter is having family troubles or a death or something I can't think of why they haven't worked anything out yet unless Carter has asked to be left a lone but even that is unlikely asword of that would have leaked by now so honestly I have no idea |
