Eklund: Why on Earth Is Sather Trying to Move Ryan Callahan?
- Eklund

Ek, this is pretty serious stuff. Do you think we should try contact Sather and ask him some of the questions you brought up? If there's one thing I've learned from my time at hockeybuzz, it's that Eklund knows more than general managers. I think the Rangers should offer him the league max. He may be good for only 15-20 goals a year, but like you said, he is their glue. And you can't put a price on glue.

Because he wants Over $6MM a year.

He is not worth that, IMO. Apparently many agree, icluding the Rags GM.

The length of the deal is a major sticking point. If Callahan wanted five years at let's say $6 mil per, then you could say that's in a reasonable ballpark. But if he truly wants seven years at the AAV given his style of play and propensity for injuries, as I wrote last night, http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=57565, then exploring all options makes a ton of sense. Even though many of us view him as the heart-and-soul of the Rangers, but unfortunately, business and using your head has to be separate from following your heart.

Some might disagree given that they're a good bet to make the playoffs but I also like Sather diagnosing his team as not a contender. There is a very clear line between a mere playoff team and a contender and fans and GMs alike pretend it doesn't exist far too often.

Glen Sather is the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence GM.

He always thinks bringing in outside players are going to bring his team to the next level and can never see value in a player who's already on his team. He seriously builds his teams like a kid playing NHL 2014.

Ask the Leafs how they feel about signing that "heart and soul" kind of player.

He's never had more than 54 points and he's only had 40 points three times. Heart and soul is nice, but don't be ridiculous. The value he'd bring the Rangers in a trade would outweigh his actual value (a.k.a. his perceived value is way higher than his actual value). They could undoubtedly get a first rounder and a decent-to-good prospect for Callahan at the deadline. Girardi is frankly also overvalued. They'd be able to get a similar, if not higher, package for him at the deadline.

Frankly, the Rangers organization would be benefitted by dealing these two players, not signing them long-term, and retooling, not rebuilding. Think about it: dealing Callahan and Girardi would give them three first-rounders this summer. They could use those picks to fill holes on the roster or enhance the farm system, while also saving the money it would have cost to lock up Callahan and Girardi and spending it to actually improve the team.

How in earth would not overpay for a player who's prime is almost done repeating history for the Rangers? Repeating history would be signing him for top dollars and then trade him to us for our best prospect...

literally the first time ive ever agreed with an Eklund blog. Callahan is having a down season in terms on scoring but the leadership and heart he provides for that team cannot be overlooked. Rangers need callahan.

I hope he gets traded very soon.

Huge overpay, but I'm sure some team will go there, which is why the Rangers absolutely should trade Callahan.

Yeah, you gotta be careful giving out too much money for "intangibles" and "character" instead of actual ability and production.

Because obviously Sather has had talks with his agent and he is either expecting too much or leaning towards free agency... what a silly question "why is Sather trying to trade Callahan?"

Come on.... Really?

No you don't because he's getting old and gets hurt a lot and has only hit 50 points once in his career, and will bring the Rangers back 1 or 2 young studs in a trade. You want the Rangers to sign him for 7 years and $42M
