Why on Earth Is Sather Trying to Move Ryan Callahan?

Will have a rumor chart update, but this story is truly baffling....on so many levels.

The Rangers are actively trying to trade Ryan Callahan. Their heart and soul. Their captain. Their glue.

People on twitter are calling this a "sound business decision" to which I say those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Ryan Callahan IS the NY Rangers. Is he worth 6 million a year for 5 years? maybe not, but he will get it from someone, and to the Rangers you could argue he is worth at least that. Just because a guy doesn't light up the scoring column it doesn't mean a guy isn't valuable. Ryan Callahan is valuable and everyone around the NHL I talk to is shaking their heads. His loss, especially mid-season, would be intensely damaging to a franchise that for some reason loves to damage their franchise needlessly.

Sure, you can get something for Ryan Callahan...but how much. You won't get a top prospect. It is often the case that players like Callahan are worth far more to their current team than just another center who is a pending UFA is worth to some other team.

The Rangers are in the playoff hunt still. Hell, they are in the playoffs! They are currently in the playoffs and looking at Philly or Columbus or another winnable series...You give me Lundqvist against any of those teams and I know I have a shot in a best of 7. Win a round and get on a roll and ....who knows?

So EVEN if you find Callahan's numbers don't work for your long range plan...there is no point in moving him and punting on a season that still is very much alive. Risking losing him for nothing versus the return he would get is a way, way, WAY better option. Lose him for nothing if you have to. At least you tried to win something...

If Callahan becomes a UFA he WILL get paid. MANY NHL teams would love to have him including the teams across the NY bridges and tunnels who will be first in line.

Bottom line...

If you don't have the money to pay your heart and soul it is because you made other mistakes or planned very poorly...but to sacrifice Callahan to fix those issues is so many wrongs not making any rights. At all.

This is insanity.
