Hagg's been a key piece on their shut down pair.
Laughton & Leier were hamstrung by an awful coaching job by Sutter, not the only reason they struggled, but a lot of the Canadian team had issues. Sutter seemed to be jamming too much into them for a short tourney. - Jsaquella
Completely agree. How does a team as talented as them come out flat and allow the first goal in almost every game?
Sutter seemed to rely very heavily on his skilled guys instead of rolling lines. I would have liked to see more of a mix in the top 6. He loaded up with as many skilled guys as possible, but it would have been better to provide balance. |

There is something I have been thinking about.
How willing, would the Oil be in giving up that #1 pick for immediate help and Ekblad. |

Three things continue to frustrate me with the Flyers play. Now, I appreciate the team starting to win on a regular basis, however repeated mistakes are being made.
One that continues to frustrate me is the play around the crease. the forwards have a tendency to face the goalie, and watch the puck. Thus, when the other team's forward gets the puck out in front of the net from behind the net, the defensive player going to the net has a chance to shot the puck . Or, an offensive player sneaks around to the open side of the net to bang it in. I always thought that the forwards should face outwards if possible, and look behind them to track the puck or in front of them to track the player going to the front of the net or the sides. Let the defenders handle the guys behind the net, and the goalie worry about the paint. Maybe, I am being an arm chair QB, but I would have thought that this is the way to play in your own end.
Then, there is puck possession. I think that Downie has brought some of that to the team. If the he could teach, or help out the other forwards with this, then that would be a vast improvement on how they keep the puck under their control.
Finally, quit shooting high, and wide. Grossman, especially. If you are looking for rebounds or deflections, try shooting at the goalie's skates. If something is not working, try something different.
Any thoughts. Just no rotten tomatoes, please.
Thanks.

The games I saw, it seemed that the players were battling their assignments as much as the opposing team. It's like they had an idea of what they were supposed to be doing, but were not 100% sure.
It was like a team under a new coach struggling to learn the system. Of course that's just the handful of games I saw. Guys seemed hesitant and unsure. |

Teravainen looks like a steal for Chicago.
Tatar, a young Slovak for Detriot the other day. They keep finding these guys, and Mantha looks like a good pick as well.

The Flyers do a solid job drafting. Not great, but solid. The key is to keep their damned picks, and not trade them for guys like Kubina. |

For sure. I for one actually liked Kubina when he first came over pre-injury. Played damn well. |

He looked OK, but that's was 4 drfat picks lost for him & Grossmann. I get it, but you're not going to have a good systemic depth when you don't pick in round 2 for 5 out of 8 years |

Interesting Tampa is one of the 8 US cities to apply as the host for the 2018 WJC |

Some Random thoughts:
On Laughton: Being named captain of team Canada is pressure enough without having to deal with a bad coach. From the little bit I saw and what I've read, I thought he did a decent job in a very difficult situation.
On the Flyers D for 14-15: The only way they are getting a #1 guy is if they are willng to part with Couturier, B Schenn and more. I think Girardi would fit in nicely in Berube's system and I could live with Boyle replacing Timonen as long as the deal is for no more than 2 years. I would then trade Grossmann for cap space and go with the following:
Coburn-Boyle
Streit-Girardi
Gus or Lauridsen-Schenn
On Berube: Pretty hard to fault the job he has done so far. Unlike Lavi, he has crafted a system that fits his talent. I'd really like to see what he could do with a bit more talent and mobility on D. |

I don't think the coach of Canada is a bad coach, his record in the WJC prior to this even was 13 - 0, the spot Canada went wrong is asking too many players to play a style that didn't fit many of them as well as for the first time in maybe ever Canada was playing in fear or losing & not with a confidence to dominate.
They had too few players who were grinders or the ability to play that style. Many of this roster have the skill to blow the doors off the other team, however in what I watched I saw too much of them not working together to make things happen. |
