A #3 center with size that can take part time duties as a 2C if needed - I agree completely!
- saskoil21

There'd be nothing wrong with a one or two year contract. He could play centre on the second line and we could shift Gagner to the wing.

I do love to watch him fight.
- The_Hinter

Ahmen to that. He sure did in Ivans career. Calgary signed their tough guy, Brown is willing but he just isn't enough of a deterrent by himself. Not a heavy weight so to speak.

We would have had to give up something of value- actually multiple assets of value for 1 of Ryan- IMO it would be great but would just create another hole or holes on this team....
- saskoil21

Yeah I guess so, almost any hole created is worth it for a guy like Bobby Ryan.
Are you suggesting it would have costed say Yaks? In that case yeah a deal could stall to a non-starter.

I would have been willing to almost strip the cupboards for him.

Would you move Yak, Hall, or Eb, for a player like Bobby Ryan?

Honest question.

He would have been the toughness they require to even out things along the boards and in the corners.

i'd consider antropov over brunner or armstrong. only based on size. one year $4m contract.

I think they'll be cursing that Clarkson contract in a few years.

as far as leaving money on the table from edm, I do believe it as im sure mact wouldn't offer that term. and thank goodness. that'll be an anchor in the last couple years

- hugefemale dog77

I dunno man - not sure where the cap will be in 4-5 years but there is already word it will be up near 70 next year.

Market wise, when guys Filpula are getting 5+, Clarkson is lookin pretty good if you're Nonis, the 7 year term is probably the reason he didn't get closer to six million.

I do agree that his numbers may not always parallel the deal but his compete level is so high.

EDIT:

Speaking of "market-wise", how is Hall's deal going to look in 2-3 years. Shazzam.

If we can't find that 2LW, and I don't think we will, I would take Penner back on the cheap.

he's much more of true 3rd line center than Gordon.

stoked we got boyd no question about it as he brings a bunch of qualities we sorely needed. but we overpaid by at least half a mil. dude's a 4th liner and I think we'd be better served with someone like antropov on the 3rd.

but as much as it pains me to agree with clouts, he is right that u don't pay 4th liners 3 mil. id assume mact plans on slotting him on our 3rd, at least initially.

not preferable but yes...Ebs or Yak. Not Hall. Not RNH.

That's one of those deals we may have to make in a couple years.

this is true. I never really take into account the rising cap.
I see 5+ for 7 years for a 29 year old who's career high is 46 points and I immediately think that's insane.

however, unless the cap is somewhere astronomical around 75-80 (which is entirely plausible and makes any deal south of 6.5 manageable) I think nonis might be rethinking that term when hes paying a 36 year old 3rd liner 5+ to get 30 points.

I agree. I still think smid is better but we can move Nick then. Plus Hainsey has some experience. He would be a good asset. However I want to see our second line fixed and a trade made for someone with hemsky. I am thinking Vanek. Both are on one year deals that have them over paid. We would have to add to that but I think that should be the target.

Edit. Can you imagine Vanek, Gagner and Eberle and Hall, RNH and Yak? Hall and yak need the play maker of RNH more than Vanek and Eberle do. Plus taking RNH off the first line might allow him to develop and have a whole year. Less pressure.

- Hall Fan

As always, the problem with this is there's no grit in the top 6 & that's what the Oilers are missing. Vanek doesn't solve that - Wayne Simmonds would though so if you're talking about a trade involving next year's 1st rounder, move it for a player like Simmonds, who scores 20 to 30 goals per season, hits, fights & creates space for the skilled kids - he would be the perfect fit on the Oilers yet some just don't see it or feel he'll want too much money - so what?? Then move Gagner or some other young kid to create more cap space.

By not bringing in size up front in the top 6, this team just won't compete because as we seen last year, the kids do get banged & pushed around quite easily, hence the injuries to guys like Ebs & RNH.

I don't watch Ryan play enough to answer that, but you'd pretty much have to considering what OTT paid...
