Jan Levine: Game 29: NYR 3 NJD 2, Hank/MDZ Key W. Gaborik-D Boyle/Kreider/Sather. FLA
Big win, lots of topics to discuss - airjan23
From previous blog:
I wouldn't mind seeing the Rangers just add someone like clowe for the run. I know a right handed Dman is all the rage but it just maybe too high a price.
Cally - Step - Hags
Nash - Rich - Gabby
Kreider - Miller - Clowe
Pyatt -Boyle/Halpern - Haley/Powe
With Clowe's struggles and his expiring contract i think he could be gotten on the cheap with a prospect and a pick. Have to be realistic about how many of our prospects will actually have a spot on this club in the future.
This is just a thought... but was wondering if anyone believes that Asham might be traded and that he is inserted into the line up to market him. I believe him to be very expendable with the way Haley played and I wouldn't be sad to get a pick for him.

Good read Jan... As fans there are always pieces that we would like to add. I agree that getting rid of Gabby might burn us. - climbdenali12
Is Gabby that bad that he cant get us what Mike Richards got Philly if we throw in a second or something? |

I don't think he has value to this team anymore but I would think that he still a value to someone as he can fill in the back end of the roster.

Miller and Kreider together are suited for 3rd line duty so early in their careers with top 6 talent. I think its perfect as they develop. I'd like to see Boyle moved down and allow Miller to play center. He was on the ice a lot in critical situations toward the end of the NJ game, reminds me of Stepan being on the ice in those same situations as a rookie, you just wonder if Miller in a full training camp would have made the team outright. I really think Torts who is often viewed as inflexible has changed his tune somewhat and is willing to allow his offensive players to flourish and play freely. I am anxious to see how Kreider responds. |

I just want to say this, because I realize it is unpopular opinion. I am getting sick and tired about hearing about Chris Kreider's development. He was drafted in 2009. This is his fourth full season since his draft year. You have kid's coming into the league that are playing at 19 years old, and you don't here as much talk about hurting their development. JT Miller is 2 years younger than Chris Kreider, and is already playing well in the NHL. Michael Del Zotto is one year older than Chris Kreider, and this is his fourth season in the NHL.
Chris Kreider needs to play with the Rangers if he can help the team win. And if he is such a shrinking violet that some adversity will kill his confidence and career, so be it. Most babied prospect ever! |

The one area I'd disagree with is that some players take a little longer to develop. Kreider is a sniper, always was a sniper and got away with it his whole life. Maybe some of these other guys who are contributing have been trained and taught to be hockey players first. I am just playing a little devils advocate here, i just think everyone has a different developmental path. Of course you may be 100% correct and he turns out to be a big fat bust. |

Get well soon Glen!
I think Ryan Clowe (or someone of his ilk) would go a long way towards creating room on the ice for some of the Rangers other forwards. I keep waiting for Brian Boyle to toughen up and take that role, but he sort of comes and goes... |

I am not saying he's a bust. I am saying we need to stop talking about his development so much. He is not 19 years old. If he can help the Rangers, he should be with the Rangers, not with the Whale. I can give a rat's ass about his development, when he is a 2009 draftee. Time to step-up and play with the big boys.
That is what I am saying. I think he can really help this team, and the time is now. Not next year, not in 2016. Now! |

More and More how I think about this Roster. Why can't we be a bit more patient? I think we are only looking at Hank but Richards and Gabby aren't exactly the core of the team right now and aside from Hank who out of what you'd consider core players are above 28? Thats right 0.
Step, Hags, Kreider, Miller, Nash, Cally is your Core. Doesnt sound like a group that has a 1-2 year window.
DZ, Staal, McD, Girardi. Again, doesnt sound like a group with a 1-2 year window...
I would support the 1 step back 2 step forward like Philly. If Gabby can be traded for a young player that could be added to that young core. Do it and just let this team play together for however many years.
Again, only damper on that is Hank's age but NOTHING else. |

I like that core, but this might be a fact that is hard for us to accept. There are other teams with better cores. Pittsburgh has Crosby, Malkin, Neal, Letang, et. Boston has Seguin, Lucic, Hamilton, Kreiji, Marchand, et. There are several more teams in the East that are building pretty nice cores, including are rivals on the Island.
You have to seize the day, IMO, and try to win soon. I am not saying compromise the future, but I'm not down with taking a step back.

Thats my point. I feel like we are just applying band-aids. Need a Righty D man, get Boyle. Need Jam? Get Clowe. Lets get deeper, better, not for jsut the next 20 games. But to make our team actually a better club for the long haul. |

It all comes down to price. Every contending team will trade assets at the deadline to try to get better. I'm not saying give up the store with the Rangers, but they need to look for something akin to the Antropov deal a few years ago. Solid second tier scoring option for a second round pick type of deal. Or, if they sign this kid from Nebraska-Omaha, that may allow them to move a defensive prospect. And then you can always pick-up picks later, by trading spare parts (i.e., Boyle), if need be. |
