That is my one fear with Bennett. It's the reason that I'd like to see someone like Morrow come here. If Bennett does hit the wall or get banged up, you could move the new guy up to the top six. I'd like to find a "middle six" veteran who might be a third liner now, but has played top 6 roles him his career with skill players, and could still fill in if needed.

In any case, Iginla is on the Penguins’ radar, and Shero has coveted what he could bring in the dressing room – veteran leadership and a sense of going for it attitude to a group that consists of 12 players to have won the Cup in 2009 – as much as what he could do on the ice; though, Shero does believe Iginla can contribute on the ice.

There were scouts from seven clubs at Consol Energy Center on Tuesday night. The regulars (Tampa Bay and Columbus, the latter which has had officials here often the past few weeks) were joined by scouts from Colorado, Winnipeg, Boston, Edmonton, San Jose and, indeed, Calgary. Edmonton had two scouts at the game.

= One bit of information picked up after the game is that there is a growing sense, at least within the league, that the Penguins will make a push to add several players before the trade deadline.

They continue to target a top-four defenseman, preferably a partner for Letang, which would allow Matt Niskanen anchor a third defense pairing. The coaching staff believes Niskanen is one of the NHL’s better fifth defensemen, and that the overall corps would benefit if he could bring stability to a third pairing.

The Penguins are currently carrying eight defensemen. Only rookie Simon Despres would need not clear waivers for an AHL assignment.

= The Penguins also want to bolster their bottom-six forwards, ideally with a one of two players, including a center that could contribute on the penalty kill in a fourth-line role. The club also is looking for a third-line option on the right wing, though coaches are enthused by the recent coming-around play of RW Tyler Kennedy.

= Newer information, however, has the Penguins looking for a top-six winger in addition to the defense and lower lineup needs.

The word late Tuesday night was that the Penguins may look for a veteran on an expiring contract, one who could play the left wing on a line with Malkin and RW James Neal. The Penguins want to spark Malkin and Neal, who were so dominant last season, but had combined to score 11 of their 22 goals on the power play.

The aim is to find 5-on-5 comfort for Malkin and Neal.

This does not eliminate Bennett from the mix going forward, but a second-line left winger would give the Penguins some options – and one of those options might be, if Kennedy is part of any trade, for Bennett to work in some on the opposite wings on the third line with LW Matt Cooke and C Brandon Sutter.

Coaches like Bennett’s skill and how it leads to puck possession in tight quarters, and they also have been impressed with his defensive awareness.

So, indeed, and as expected, there is growing buzz, even if there is no indication that trade talks are turning serious.

= Something to consider: The Penguins will play only 10 games after April 3. They play that night – at the New York Rangers – and there is a preference to do something sooner rather than at the deadline, though there is not a lot of reason for optimism that a deal would get done soon because this remains a sellers’ market.

Expiring LW contract - it has to be one of the following - Brendan Morrow; Clark McArthur; Mason Raymond or Chris Higgins. I wouldn't mind taking a chance with Raymond.

Edmonton shouldn't need to be scouting the Pens - Smid or Fistric don't warrant a roster player back.

Boston isn't going to strike a deal with the Pens and vice versa.

San Jose doesn't need to send a scout to watch Pittsburgh - Clowe doesn't warrant a roster player. Tampa - same thing, unless Purcell is a guy Pittsburgh is looking at.

Winnipeg - don't see a match. We have already done our deal with them.

Calgary with two scouts there scares me. Don't want Iggy. Hopefully its more about Glencross, Stempniak or Giordano.

It shouldn't. He is terrible. He has been a healthy scratch for how long on one of the worst defensive teams in the league and he is making 4.5 million too boot.

..but if you asked me he would be a top 6 in this team, definitely.

I cannot wait until the trade deadline is done.

It won't hurt his development as a player at all, it will hurt the Penguins chances of winning a Stanley Cup. He isn't a playoff style third line player, nor does he need to be. It's top 6 or bust for Bennett on this current roster. Fortunately he has done nothing to be bumped off that 2nd line so it's a non issue.

In his 16 games Bennett looks way more versatile than I would have thought. I give him a little more credit that he would be a valuable 3rd line player IF called upon. I don't think it would hurt our chances one bit provided a top 6 guy is added to the roster.

But I agree its a non issue, he has earned the spot over anyone else currently on the roster.

I cannot wait until the trade deadline is done.

Morrow, Clowe, Iginla, N.Thompson, Cleary, Hendricks....they are all welcome for the right price. Character guys always help any team.

Its not a matter of him unwilling to do the things that third liners do. I think he can do them quite well. He just needs at least 10 more pounds to be effective in that role in a Stanley Cup playoff setting.

He is really slick at lifting opponents stick and stealing the puck but I worry about the physical leverage he can generate in a playoff style setting. Like you said, he is a rookie, I have no worries about him at all moving forward. Chalk up another success for Shero.

I have to admit, I was one of his critics when the Pens signed him early out of Denver. I didn't think he was close to being ready - especially after him missing 80% of last year. He has made nice progression without question and had added some grit that I truly didn't see him display in college.

We would be firing everyone, even you. Trading everyone Crosby included and burning the CEC to the ground to dance on the ashes.

Does Dupuis really need to be on the third line. I know he only like an 80 on NHL13 but in terms of the actual NHL his chemistry and familiarity with Crosby make him like an 8000 overall.

It's the best (frank)ing line in the NHL right now. It doesn't need a sexy name.
