Ek, can you provide anything further on Big Buff? I most certainly don't see winnipeg moving their fan favorite without a substantial return! Why is winnipeg listed at only 20%???? Philly would need to give back Schenn or Couterier (which I doubt philly will move and considering winnipeg passed him up at the draft....).
Hainsey and Antropov will be goners at the end of the year anyways unless they get substantial payroll cutbacks. Hainsey isn't exactly a fan favorite, he was boo'ed the first game back after the lockout probably because of his involvement with Donald 'Fidel' Fehr.
Please please please someone, explain how on earth Buff is on this list, I'm actually concerned. |

They are still a few years away. I am a little surprised at their trouble scoring, I thought defense would be their only worry. |

Flames and Oilers both miss the playoffs but Oilers end up with the lottery pick. Flames spend and continue to try and "be competitive", whatever that means, while Oilers fans laugh. Rinse. Lather. Repeat.
The only hockey person worth a damn at ESPN is Pierre Lebrun and he's mostly a Canadian media presence anyway |

all these lottery picks are sure helping the Oilers get better....they haven't scored a goal in 2 games FFS. Already burned off 2 young stars entry level deals
that team is never gonna be a contender...a few years away pfft. you have to show some improvement. Oiler fans have nothing to laugh about other than their own team...worst 3 year stretch in NHL history, about to be 4 year. CONGRATS! |

Hahah wow I completely forgot that Eberle and Hall already signed their $6M AAV 2nd contracts.
I guess they still have $19M this offseason (just looking at Capgeek today, not counting buyouts or whatever), with Gagner likely the only expensive re-signing. Wonder what they'll do with it, at some point they have to make a serious effort at actually making the playoffs.. |

Those guys put up huge numbers playing meaningless games with no pressure at all. Fire wagon hockey losing 7-4 ect. I think their numbers were greatly inflated because of the situation. Those guys put up huge points in the AHL as I'm sure everyone knows...but nobody mentions they were 4 out of 5 teams in their division in the AHL! |

That playoff series still pisses me off. chokejob, not to mention it deprived us of a Calgary-Edmonton 2nd round
Although I guess the Ducks won the Cup the next year so my memories are probably tinted. |

From NHL.com:
Under the new CBA, if you took out all the years where the variance is well over 20% (i.e. having 3 years at $3M at the end of a contract to lower the cap hit, like Crosby's deal) this is what the following contracts would look like:
Crosby 8 years, $13M cap hit
Ovechkin 8 years, $15.5M
Kovalchuck 8 years, $12.5M
Suter 7 years, $14M
Weber 7 years $15.7M
Parise 7 years $15.7M
Getzlaf getting an average of $8.2M a season is nowhere near those numbers. To say he is getting Crosby money is simply not accurate. - niedermayer27
So what about the Sedins at 6 million, r Luongo at 5.2?
Getzlaf is getting 2-3 million too much, good for him though. |

But you never actually win the Cup with these "character" based teams. Legitimate first line centers such as Getzlaf are pretty much impossible to find/replace which is why they had to give him this deal. I love the assumption that every player who makes over $8M is a "high priced prima donna." - S Kaspar Rollins
I never made the assumption that it was all the players, but there are more in the minus then the plus side. Boston was a character cup winner, and I bet you there will be a "character cup" winner this year. |

You put Gomez and Getzlaf in the same sentence?? Getzlaf is a true #1 Center and Gomez well...Habs deserved him...Gionta ( big monster scoring machine ) wouldnt sign in Montreal without his buddy...Getzlaf easily deserves that money compared to all the other contracts in the league. - Garnie
so did you |

pretty vast generalization considering only 5 guys currently have an $8M+ cap hit (E. Staal, Malkin, Crosby, Getzlaf)
Boston was somewhat of an anamoly I'd argue. besides, define "character team" aside from some vague old-media narrative |

yeah it's a complicated concept. no doubt there are many players whose cap hit far exceeds their actual value, but many people can't tell the difference between this and an actual toxic contract |

wow you idiotic leaf fans actually thought anaheim would trade getzlaf. good call to ek as well |
