Not getting the Weise hate. The kid was a 24 year old waiver pick up. Maybe expectations need to be tempered.

He's put up numbers in the AHL that would have many in this fanbase clamouring had he been an actual Canuck drafted player.

He may be a fringe NHLer, but at 24, there's still time for him to be a solid bottom 6 player.

Definitely worth a contract spot, whether he makes the big club or not.

I agree here. DAle W. is a solid forth liner who can skate, hit and and is decent positionally. He seemed to forget his role last yr. I put this on AV for allowing it to happen.

He's not bad as a AHL call-up and for organizational depth, but he shouldn't be on a contending team's roster when everyone's healthy. He didn't bring enough energy every night and lacked hockey sense/defensive play IMO.

good point.
I like the Vandermeer signing. He is far better then Rome and is willing to drop the mitts. Barker

- Bieksa#3

I like Vandermeer as a 7/8 guy as well, toughness and a fringe 6/7 on most teams. That being said, we're in trouble if he ends up playing more than a handful of games.

I think part of it is also that many Canucks fans were under the impression that he was in the goon/fighter mold, which he isn't.

He's a grinder with a bit of offensive skill. Whether it's enough skill to keep him in the NHL is yet to be seen.

Rome played every night and Vandermeer is better. He'll be fine under AV.

Not yet, at least.

People forget he's only 24, and like I said, was putting up decent numbers at a young age in the AHL and also had a physical edge. If you can pick up a young player like that for nothing, you do it 10 times out of 10.

I'm actually strongly against the goon/tough guy thing, unless the dude can actually play hockey and be an effective 4th liner with actual production and play.

I see this season being much like 08-09. We play defense and hope our goalies bail us out. Pretty clear IMO that Lu is here for a while or we aren't getting anything.

Yeah, I'm not really a proponent of having one in the lineup full-time either, but when Weise was acquired I remember a lot of banter about him being a fighter.

Yeah, I don't think we can afford to play an offensive, up-tempo style against teams like Edmonton/Chicago, etc especially while Kesler is out.

I think PKer means Barker, who had a 3million/season contract that was bought out. Parent has never made more than 950,000/season.

AV "we have been looking at Barker for some time now"

Players "we think Vandermeer can help this team"

AV never lets the opportunity to let the media know that he got his player slip by. AV and Gillis think Barker can skate, carry the puck well and start the rush. Interesting.

Oh, he is a fighhter, just not a winner. Actually now that I think of it there is a difference between a fighter and someone willing to be beat up for money, nevermind.

I'm not a fan of our scouts at all, the guys in the OHL and Gradin in Sweden aren't bad but we've struggled picking in the WHL and QMJHL and I'm ot too sure about our pro-scouts, I think MG relies on his own opinion for the most part when analyzing NHL players.

The guy who recommended Barker has got to go.

Hopefully they meant on the Wolves.

I don't really mind the signing, but if all goes right, Barker doesn't step on the ice at Rogers arena after training camp is over.

All we need is Raymond on defence, someone who falls down backwards.

the Atlanta Hawks scored 5 points(yes not a typo) in the 2nd quarter tonight. For a whopping 20 first half points
That is beyond pathetic
