I am not terribly upset by this move on the basis of depth, especially for a season in which there most likely will be plenty of injuries. The thing that concerns me about this move is, who's spot is he taking up on the roster? Is he going to prevent someone more valuable to the team from developing or contributing? |

I feel that Darcy is just "letting it ride" this year, and maybe next year too. These are going to be throw-away years until Grigorenko, Armia, McCabe, and Gurgensons can come up and take over. After next season, Vanek, Pominville, and Miller's contracts are all expiring. There will be MANY changes in 2 years for the Sabres. |

I don't dislike Hecht. It's just too easy to bring him back. What we have doesn't work. Changes need to be made. Darcy keeps bringing back guys who he likes and is comfortable with. Good thing Nashville overpaid Gaustad and took him out of the running.
Not long ago we needed to upgrade at center. Darcy signed Tim Connolly. He brought back Mancari after it looked like he had moved on from that experiment. Bob Corkum, anyone? |

It's not like he is being brought back with a huge amount of expectation. He adds depth and a knowledge of the system. If he signed a 2-way minimum contract it is a great signing. (as long as he is healthy). |

Glad to see an article on Hecht brings with it a picture of Corey Tropp.

Agreed, though Grigorenko is an outside chance to make the team, and Girgensons is long, long from it. My puzzlement is I see Hecht being so much like Leino, not sure now what the plan is for the best beard on the team. |

It will probably be a 1-way deal. Money isn't really an issue and he did give a lot of to the organization.
I just don't see the point in taking up a roster spot with a guy who is one hit away. The experience that he brings is concussions, missing the playoffs and 1st round exits. Sure he was on teams that were better than that and made it farther into the playoffs. But that was 6+ years ago.
If you need a crusty vet for depth, why not bring in someone who has actually won something like Sykora or Arnott? |

As long as Lindy Ruff is a head coach, there will always be a Matt Ellis on this team. Sometimes his name is Matt Ellis, sometimes it's Adam Mair, or Chris Taylor. There will always be someone |

With such a short trainig camp those guys you mention would have to adapt to Ruff's system quicklly. Plus, and I have no details, I think Arnott and Sykora might want longer or more money in their deal than Hecht. Plus we can send him down to Rochester if he doesn't make the team. (I doubt he would get claimed). |

The Sabres are short on forward depth.
The Amerks are short on forward depth.
This was a good signing as long the cap hit is low. With a very short training camp having a vet know the system is important to come out of the gate running.
More moves will happen this season (now? trade deadline?) |

Yes, he went back in Rochester's lineup December 15 and has played 10 games since then (4 G, 5 A). |
