thoughts on the Luongo trade.

Personally, I think it's time for Kadri to make the jump to the NHL. In doing so, I believe this makes MacArthur expendable. Why?

Burke has constantly stated that Kadri is a top six forward and will only join the NHL as one. If this is true, we know this much... It won't be on the first line, so the top line will remain the same.

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel

This means that Kadri will be on the second line. With JVR and Grabo guaranteed spots on that line, that means that Kadri will need to take MacArthurs spot.

Second, Franson has worn out his welcome. So he's added in.

This means MacArthur and Franson are part of the deal. I don't think this will be enough for Vancouver, so they'll ask for one prospect. Debate will continue around who it should be, but personally I think it will end up as a grinder like D'Amigo.

3 players to Van
MacArthur
Franson
D'Amigo

1 to Toronto
Luongo

- ILoveLamp

I reject that trade on behalf of the Canucks. Just because I find that D'Amigo guy (franking)ing annoying in that Marlies commercial on Sportsnet, really the whole commercial just annoys me.

This is the problem with Leafs fans. The idea that the Leafs need to "pick a direction" and "get that number one centre"

First of all, they picked a direction 4 years ago: its called build around 2 young superstars, Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf and add young controllable pieces until you have a perennial contender.

Burke has proven he is not going to sell out to the morons who think he needs to save his own job just by making the playoffs. However, the point is moot because the Leafs are going to make the playoffs this year, even with no new roster additions. The reason is a solid D, solid 3/4 line depth, 2 scoring lines and Riemer.

I don't buy the Luongo trade for the simple reason that Bozak is our best centre. Unless theres a contingency plan, I don't see it happening.

Frattin/Colbourne and Finn/Percy probably gets it done and is a better trade.

I will never support the trading of Kadri.

Also so sick of hearing about the number one centre. Lupul and Kessel woudnt have gotten more points last year even with a number one centre. Now they will do even better because the second line of Grabbo, JVR and Kadri will be a much larger threat than in years past. 2 solid lines = success., it doesnt matter what position the players play. Sure, an allstar centre would be nice, but the idea that success can't be had without that is ridiculous. Bozak fills the roll nicely.

the Direction Burke picked has not worked as all had hoped. Kessel is not the player you build around, and Dion is not the #1 stud D you think he is.

A new Direction is needed, a #1 Center should be a priority.
The bozak experiment is getting old and tiresome. Then find a new goalie. Almost 34 year old Luongo is not the answer..for a team still rebuilding after 4 years

Luongo will keep you competitive for 4-5 years until the Leafs find that young stud goalie. In the mean time, the city can't take a full on rebuild, Luongo will get them into the playoffs a few times and allow the young guys to develop.

I would rather a full rebuild then just a couple years in the playoffs, I want to see the Stanley Cup hoisted before I am dead. Making the playoffs and then getting elminated just hurts the Leafs position in the draft.

I think there's many Leaf fans who crave a full rebuild.

If there's any city that can take it, it's Toronto.

I like higher picks to aid the rebuild..not the 10-15th picks you speak of

if Luongo was on a 3 year deal...I might open the door if he knocked.

I still think there would be plenty of teams interested in him, I mean look at some of the recent UFA signings over the past couple of seasons.

uhh.. starting over a rebuild... you dont want to be all that competitive.. it just slows things down

play the kids.. live and die by them.. and stock up

if they succeed earlier than hoped.. all the better.

The NHL is a crazy league, you just have to get hot and stay relatively healthy to win the cup, while getting a few bounces to go your way. The Leafs can obviously score goals as they showed last year, plus adding JVR should only help and Kulemin/Frattin should score a few more goals next season. The only problem has been keeping the puck out of their own net, where Lu would be a big upgrade, and very few goalies can handle a 60+ game workload year in and year out, which is something he has proven to be able to do.

Who knows how long Burke's leash really is, and how much pressure ownership is putting on him to get them some big time playoff revenue in the biggest hockey market in the league. Every owner wants to make money, this is a business after all.

My bad, totally slipped my mind for some reason.

His rights can still be traded, even if he signs in Europe for the entire season though, right?

Excuse me? We've gotten on just fine with missing the playoffs for 8 years. What bothers us is that a full rebuild should've been more than half way done. All along, if Burke said this would take time, and he actually rebuilt this team (using Robin's definition) we'd give him more time instead of more rope to hang himself.

He's going to be skating in the summer, also.

Burke was the wrong guy for the job to begin with. Burke has never been the type to sit down and rebuild a team over a long period of time. He's always been the big move, make a lot of noise and do things as quickly as possible type of guy. For certain teams, at certain times, that works. But not here and not now.

This reminds me of the Lindros jerseys they made up in the 90's. Just because someone made them up does not mean he is coming to Toronto.
- mikeinbuffalo

Mike, u forget that Lindros did play for Toronto?

I say we trade for Luongo and then trade him back to Vancouver at the deadline when they're sitting in 11th place because of poor goaltending from Schneider.
