I've been thinking about this and I say it would, I see it as a blemish on the accomplishment makes it lessened to a significant extent. I wouldn't want the Avs winning the cup on a shortened season.
- Avs-Ice

What you have to be saying is you wouldn't want it to be a fluke one-and-done scenario. You cant tell me that you wouldn't be sick watching a rival team skate around the rink with the cup.

What would Doan say about this? That's all that really matters right?

I was gonna say that whatever team wins it is going to hear about it being a lesser championship from fans of other teams, but I never hear anyone say that about the Devils. Interesting.
- OnPoint

Oh we heard about it for a while, but we validated it 5 and 8 years later.

If the season was like 50 games last year the Leafs would have made the playoffs. Definitly not the cup though hahaha. I Sabres are looking good but I don't see them winning over teams like LA and NYR
- wolfos412

and the sabres would have had a lottery pick... probably would have picked the same guy though

Buffalo fans deserve a Cup regardless of the season length.

The Brett Hull fiasco still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth and I'm not even a Sabres fan. Next to lockouts that was top 3 worst moments for the NHL. So, the question is whether or not you'd like to win the Cup on a failed call? Let's question Dallas's Cup legitimacy if we're going to question that of a shortened season.

please don't start that... we get called whiners enough for that. But it is nice to hear that it was a blown call from someone outside of Buffalo..

Whould you think differently had they not won two cups already?
- The_Inkwell

I thought about that perspective if I were Buffalo fans, or a fan of another cupless team I would want the first time to be spe...I sound like a woman.

Definitely I'd hate to see Vancouver (likely) or Calgary/Minnesota (Not likely) with the cup. I would just tell them it didn't count due to the shortened season, well I'd actually say congrats, but surely other fans would talk poop. Like I said it would seem like a blemish on the victory.

If the playoffs were best of 3 or only the top 4 in each conference got in, that's a blemish. The regular season is too long as it is. It doesn't matter if that is cut in half, as long as they playoffs are the same. Those 16 wins are the true test.

Unless the Leafs won it. Then they should asterisk it. Twice.

Meh, Vancouver 'won' the regular season the last 2 years. Doesn't mean anything in the playoffs. The Kings barely scrapped into the playoffs and they won the Cup. It certainly doesn't take anything away from them winning. I'm sure we'd all love our team to go 82-0 on their way to a 16-0 sweep of the playoffs, but just getting it done and winning the Cup is all that has ever mattered.

I was going to mention something similar earlier but was afraid I would get yelled at for going off topic. I always wondered why the league would want to play it's most important games on the warm/soft ice of May/June. Shorten the season and have the playoffs end the last week of April or first week of May.

Off topic is not only acceptable, it's encouraged.

I love watching hockey. My team, a rival team, 2 non-conference cellar dwellars. pros, minors, midgets... I don't care. It's an exciting and entertaining game. But IMO, 82 is too many. Shorten the season and limit back-to-backs for everyone. Get the regular season down to under 70 games and decide the cup well before Memorial Day. Counting pre-season, that's still an 8 month season. The down side is that it leaves over 4 months open for Shane Doan blogs and Bobby Ryan trade scenarios.

It will give up way too much revenue. They will not shorten the season when more than half the teams are already losing money.

I would want my first time to be special! In Buffalo we are lowering our standards to the fat slob in the corner!

They shouldnt have called it a championship back then. It was more like "Did you beat the Montreal Candiens?"

- Buffalo--Sabres

I barely ever post mostly just a lurker and am not trolling at all I love reading all teams blogs. I'm sorry though, I can't really agree with you on this. Yes there were less teams but think of the concentration of talent. I'm not calling the league watered down in anyway, but think of the path you would have to take to get to the NHL and how good those guys at the top would be.

Also what I am getting at is the Leafs were just as good back then as the Habs. It's only since 1967 that this team has become an utter joke. By the time of expansion the Leafs franchise had 13 cups. The Habs, they had 14, it was a two horse race at one time. That's all Im saying. But, yeah bring on the Leafs suck. Cause in all honesty we know they do.

I was really kidding around. I was really just referencing the fact the the Candiens forever were the team to beat. I know the whole 13 cups, 14 cups and such. But its the Habs streches of winning the cups and dominance at those times that make them like no other club ever.

You should check out Alan Bass's book, The Great expansion.

It does a really good job detailing what NHL hockey was like before and after the expansion and what it meant to win the cup after.

Keptup is spot-on. May and June are for for being outside, playing golf, cutting the grass, not staying in from 7 PM to 1 AM watching double and triple OT games for 2 months solid. Looooove the playoffs. The league should start the season at the same time it does now, but cut back 15 games or so, then the Finals will be over before the Summer Solstice.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely be checking that out. Looks like a good read.

As far as the question of if a shortened season makes a SC any less sweet. I think the answer is an emphatic no.

I wouldn't care how my team got there. The only thing of importance would be watching your captain hoist that beauty. For teams with droughts like Vancouver, Buffalo, Toronto etc... I think we would take it any way we could.

Actually being outplayed by Jeff Hostetler in the same game was worse than wide right.

He's about as clutch as Brad Johnson
