Hockey season is inching closer and closer to Tampa Bay. And it finally has a date.

Via a Wednesday press release, the Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that the club’s 24th annual training camp will begin on Thursday, Sept. 24 at AMALIE Arena. The first day of camp will begin with off-ice testing and the annual media day, and the team will hit the ice the following morning.

Given the number of skaters (and head coach Jon Cooper) that the Lightning have participating in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, there’s a good chance that the group will be a bit short when everything opens up for the group on that Thursday, which is the same day as Team Finland (Valtteri Filppula) vs. Team Russia (Nikita Kucherov, Nikita Nesterov, Vladdy Namestnikov, and Andrei Vasilevskiy) and Team USA (Ben Bishop) vs. Team Czech Republic (Ondrej Palat and Andrej Sustr).

To accommodate the long list of late arrivals to camp, general manager Steve Yzerman and the Bolts extended a professional tryout to veteran defenseman James Wisniewski, who will try to get his NHL career back on track after playing just one shift for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015-16 before a torn ACL put his year to an end. Wisniewski has tallied 53 goals and 274 points in 552 NHL games.

But before then, Yzerman will have to figure out new contracts for Kucherov and Nesterov.

The team also announced that they will hold their Fan Fest on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 11 a.m., which will include a live scrimmage, player autographs, and several other features for fans and families alike.
