We are one Washington win away from Alexander Ovechkin earning his first ever Stanley Cup or we are three losses away from the most Washington Capitals ending ever. Personally I think it ends with Alexander Ovechkin yanking the trophy away from Gary Bettman. More intriguing is if it ends in Game 5 will the Las Vegas crowd boo the commissioner?
What changed for Vegas? Look no further than Marc-Andre Fleury. The former Conn Smythe favorite has crashed down to earth. This flameout isn't like some of his other famous low points in the playoffs. The Golden Knights would not be in the Stanley Cup Final if not for Marc-Andre Fleury. He was great in the regular season and for three rounds. I thought it was possible for Fleury to win the Conn Smythe Trophy even in a Vegas loss, but that is no longer the case. Fleury has yet to hit a .900 save percentage in a single game in the Final and last night he was at .739. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Braden Holtby, and Alexander Ovechkin all have legit cases for the award. It isn't going to a losing team.
I saw some stats online on how the Penguins Matt Murray did best against the Capitals than the other goalies. I don't agree with that
Murray may have done better against the Capitals than Fleury, but Sergei Bobrovsky and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Sergei Bobrovsky has the most interesting sample here. His high-danger and scoring chances save percentage are both higher than his overall. That means he was letting the easy stuff in. Overall none of the goalies were great against Washington. They were all below average.
Dominik Simon may not be back in Pittsburgh. According to fellow Hockeybuzz writer Aivis Kalnins.
''Simon is interested to sign a one-way deal with the Penguins'' said his agent Michal Sivek.
In case of a two-way offer from the team he will be exploring other options and could move to the KHL where his rights belong to the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team'' he added.
Simon is looking for a one-way deal and the Penguins may only be offering a two-way deal. This has nothing to do with waivers and only his compensation. Basically he wants a guaranteed NHL salary whether he is with the big club or not. His other option is the KHL. While I will always lean towards giving chances in the bottom six to players like Simon that show an offensive pulse I don't believe losing him to the KHL is going to hurt the franchise. They have some guy Daniel Sprong that would probably want his minutes.
