News and notes from around prospect camp:

Pittsburgh seems to be on the right path these days in leaving behind non-productive toughness.

So who will answer when Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin gets cheap-shotted?

“The power play,” came the quick answer from Rutherford, with a smile.

“That’s where you do it,” Botterill agreed right away. “Look at the rest of the league. Tampa. Chicago. Rangers. Who did they have taking care of that stuff? Really, it was just that they’d punish you with being good on the power play.”

“We’ll be fine,” the GM added. “The game is changing.”

Pittsburgh has ~1 million in cap space currently with a 22 man roster.

Beau Bennett has revamped his offseason preparation in an effort to prevent future injury

At the end of last season, Pens general manager Jim Rutherford said the 6-foot-2, 195-pound winger needed to get stronger. To achieve that, Bennett changed both his training and nutrition regimens. He now drives a decent distance in order to work with a guy named Matt O’Hara, whom he said has been “awesome.”

“He knows what it takes to rehab injuries and guard against future injuries, so he’s been working with me a lot and we work out six days a week,” Bennett said. “Even something small as it takes me an hour to get there every day, it’s kind of making that sacrifice, going to a place I know is going to help me in the long run and it’s been a great summer so far. Adding in the nutrition part was a big thing this summer as well.”

For that, Bennett did a lot of testing at the beginning of the summer and figured out what he needed to gain in skeletal muscle mass in order to have functional strength – where he wants “to feel like I’m 190, but playing at 200.” A lot of that comes from leg strength, which has been Bennett’s biggest focus this summer.

Bennett was then was given a meal plan based off his goals, and while he admits the food isn’t always the tastiest, he just gets it down for the good of his body.

“Now I’m way more in tune with what I need to do for preparation and how to make my body feel right,” he said. “It’s been a really positive summer in terms of how to be a pro.”

A healthy Beau Bennett and the team clearly gearing towards four scoring lines is a good combination. Bennett did well with unskilled players the past two years.

Penguins Head Coach Mike Johnston has joined twitter.

His mentions after a loss will be a gold mine of comedy.

Prospect scrimmage is today and open to the public. From the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins will conclude their annual development camp on Saturday afternoon with a free scrimmage open to the public beginning at 3 p.m. at CONSOL Energy Center.

Fans can enter the arena through the Trib Total Media and American Eagle gates starting at 2 p.m. Free parking will be available in the CONSOL Energy Center surface lots.
PensGear – the Penguins’ official team store – will open at noon. Several concession stands will also be open during the event.

The scrimmage will be streamed live on pittsburghpenguins.com.

There is no debating against the fact that this is a very ideal situation for the team. However, they have done just fine against the Western Conference the past few years. Penguins have gone 48-18-8 against the West last 4 seasons (2012-13 no cross-conference play) including 18-6-4 last year.
