The Nashville Predators posted a dominant 5-3 victory over the Blue Jackets yesterday afternoon at Nationwide Arena, concluding the road portion of their preseason schedule with a solid performance from the younger players the team will be depending on this year and for the foreseeable future.

Filip Forsberg got the scoring going early with a goal on his first shot on goal of the preseason, selling pass on a 2 on 1, but unleashing a wicked wrister that Columbus netminder Sergei Bobbrovsky is still looking for. Then Miikka Solomaki continued his scoring tear, scoring his third of the preseason on a sick snap shot, putting the Preds up 2-0.

After the Jackets’ Cam Atkinson halved the lead on a power play goal, Kevin Fiala showed that he is back… and back fully. Fiala broke down right wing, broke down the defense then beat Bobbrovsky like a rented goalie with a sweet deke… Broken fibula? What broken fibula?

The Jacket drew to within one again after a goal from Zach Warenski early in the third period, but Pontus Aberg put home a sweet feed from Emil Pettersson to once again restore the two goal lead and give Juuse Saros an assist on the goal to boot. Fiala closed out the Nashville scoring with an empty netter.

So now, decisions will be made on who will make this team and who will not. Clear indications will be given in the last two preseason games, both at Bridgestone Arena. The coaching staff will be watching the “bubble” players carefully… seeing how they mesh with the vets, can they keep up with the go-go pace of the Laviolette system…

The best news in all of this is the obvious depth in the Predators system, especially on the blueline. Practice continues this morning.
