The Fourth Period’s Dennis Bernstein believes the Ottawa Senators could be in the mix for Arizona Coyotes winger Radim Vrbata, who is a pending UFA but has bonuses that total up to $1 Million.

THE BUZZ - The Sens might be one of the few teams that won’t be bothered by the bonuses in Vrbata’s contract, since they are not tight against the cap and want to improve their chances to lock down a playoff spot.

The news of winger Clarke MacArthur being shut down for the season allows the Sens to put his $4.65 Million on LTIR and acquire some reinforcements before March 1 and adding Vrbata at $1 Million may be enticing to Ottawa.


On his podcast for ESPN, Pierre Lebrun indicates that the Dallas Stars have a window of a dozen games before GM Jim Nill decides to stand pat or become a major seller before the March 1 deadline. The Stars have seven UFA’s, including veterans Patrick Sharp and Johnny Oduya.

THE BUZZ – It will have to be a dramatic turnaround for Dallas to not start selling before the deadline, since their goaltending and team defense have been shoddy under Lindy Ruff this season.

Veterans Sharp and Oduya would bring a great return in a very thin trade market with their Stanley Cup experience, as well as depth forwards Jiri Hudler and Lauri Korpikoski, but the 32-year-old Eaves(tied with Tyler Seguin for the Stars scoring lead) could be the Lee Stempniak of the 2017 deadline.
