5 Reasons The Habs Should Not Go After Patrick Roy

Former Montreal Canadiens goalie and hero Patrick Roy suddenly resigned as Head Coach and Vice-President of Hockey Opertaions of the Colorado Avalanche today. Roy will forever be linked to the Canadiens having backstopped the team to their last two Stanley Cups during his tenure in Montreal. While Saint Patrick will always hold a special place in the hearts of many fans, there is absolutely no reason why the Canadiens should be interested in hiring Roy. Here are five reasons why:

1) As Roy explained, he felt that he did not have enough of a voice in terms of personnel decisions as Vice-President of the Avalanche. It is impossible to imagine general manager Marc Bergevin giving an increased role to any head coach in Montreal, be it Roy or current coach Michel Therrien. Bergevin has his team in place and everyone has their designated role. A coach that is also a vice-president would not work in the Canadiens organization. President and team owner Geoff Molson would have to go through an entire change in philosophy in order to get to a place where Roy could work in Montreal

2) There is no disputing that Roy’s ego and personality is larger than life. However, we have already witnessed that Bergevin does not like anyone to be bigger than the team itself. Occasionally it is good to have a head coach who can deflect the attention away from players. On the other hand, the focus would be too much on Roy and not enough on the players. The story should be about what’s happening on the ice rather than off of it.

3) As an NHL coach, Roy has not accomplished very much since his rookie season when he helped lead the Avalanche to the playoffs. He is not known to be a great tactician, aside from pulling the goalie with lots of time on the clock… Some food for thought: as a coach, Therrien has enjoyed greater success in the postseason than Roy. Those that bring may bring up Roy’s success with the QMJHL Quebec Remparts may be forgetting that Therrien also won the Memorial Cup as a head coach with the Granby Predateurs.

4) Right now, the Canadiens arguably have the best goaltender in the NHL on their roster. Carey Price does not need to be in the shadows of Roy. This is Price’s team. If Roy was behind the bench there would be endless comparisons and added pressure on Price’s shoulders.

5) If Roy were to join the Canadiens, there would be a ticking time bomb just waiting for something to happen… A sense of unease would constantly be in the air. Roy is impulsive and goes with his gut feeling for better or worse. That is not the stability that players crave…

Cheers & follow along!
