Will a Senators player end a dubious drought this season?

The last time was 2011-12, thanks to Milan Michalek and Jason Spezza.

Five full seasons.

That is how long it has been since an Ottawa Senators player eclipsed the 30 goal plateau.

In those 5 seasons, there have been 91 individual seasons with 30 or more goals, and none of them called Canadian Tire Centre home.

The drought of 5 seasons is the second longest current streak, matching the Coyotes and the Sabres, but pales in comparison the the Red Wings. Detroit had 4 30-goal scorers in 2008-09 (Marian Hossa, Johan Franzen, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg), but haven't had one since, for the longest stretch of not having a player reach a milestone.

Ottawa has had some close calls, with Mike Hoffman having seasons of 27, 29 and 26 over the last three years respectively, Kyle Turris has added 26 and 27 goal seasons and Mark Stone chipped in 26 a couple of years ago.

Bobby Ryan, the most accomplished goal scorer on the club, came to the Senators with 4 30-goal campaigns under his belt, but he has failed to muster more than 23 in an Ottawa uniform.

In case you were wondering, Dallas and Boston each have 7 30-goal seasons since the last time an Ottawa player, to lead the league. Dallas had Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin with 3 each and Spezza with one, while the Briuns have Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron with a pair each and David Pastrnak, Jarome Iginla and Loui Eriksson also potting 30 in a year.

Dallas could have an 8th with an asterisk, as Patrick Eaves has 21 with the Stars last season before being dealt to the Ducks and adding 11 more to be one of just two players (Martin St. Louis being the other) to be traded in the midst of a 30 goal season in the last 5 years, but I digress.

In an era where 50 is a rarity, and 30 is the new 40, at least in terms of goal scoring, it would be nice if someone from the Senators could crack that barrier. I think it could happen this season, with Hoffman and Stone both having the potential to do it. They both can be very streaky, and if they can get some consistency and avoid the double digit slumps, they should both be very close.
