Where's the Beef?

Mike Gillis continues to say that Vancouver needs to get bigger up front. It would appear that Max Lapierre has not taken Gillis challenge lying down (maybe sitting down at a buffet, but definitely not lying anywhere). In a recent piece that canucks.com did on Lappy, the feisty centre looked in great shape. He also disclosed to the crew that he is weighing in at 221 pounds right now and plans to play next season at 215. That's an extra 8-10 pounds for the rest of the NHL to hate and Canucks fans to love.

If all the Canucks are following the same plan as Lappy and showing his level of commitment in the offseason, we should see a bigger, stronger, more rested team. That is very good news for Canucks fans and bad news for the rest of the NHL.

Question- What do you think of the new pumped up Lappy?

Thoughts on the Nash Deal

Well Columbus played chicken with the Rangers hoping that they would bite and they didn't. In the end, the Rangers got their guy without really giving up anything that couldn't be replaced internally. The Rangers are pretty good on D right now, so giving up Erixon was an easy decision for them. Dubinsky and Anisimov are both quality players, but they likely would have been passed by Stepan, Kreider, and possibly Hagelin this season (if not already) on the Rangers depth chart.

New York wins this one by a landslide for me just based on the fact they gave up their 7th and 8th best forwards, a prospect, and a low first for Columbus' franchise player. The bright side for Jackets fans is now with three picks in the first round next year, the rebuild is looking brighter. However, the downside for Jackets fans is you still have Howson leading the re-build.

Question- Which NYC team got better yesterday, the Rangers by adding Nash or the Yankees by adding Ichiro?

Player Wars

This will be the start of a blog I will do periodically through the summer titled "Player Wars". In this blog I will compare two players and ask you who is better. I'd like to kick things off with two players who have been part of the foundation of the Vancouver Canucks for over a decade.

Daniel Sedin VS Henrik Sedin

Henrik Sedin is a warrior and night in and night out you know what you will get with the guy. Hank shows up, Hank makes his team mates better, and Hank competes. He is outstanding at face offs and has finished amongst the league leaders in assists for the past six seasons. He leads by example and is well respected by his team mates and the community. Last season he had 81 points, finished +23, and received one 2nd place vote for the Selke (where the hell that came from I'm not sure, but the guy should not be allowed to vote next year).

When healthy, Daniel Sedin has been one of the NHL's best goal scorers over the past six seasons, breaking the 30 goal mark four times. He is the key to Vancouver's highly ranked power-play, a fact which became evident when he missed time at the end of the year due to a concussion and the power-play was atrocious. He to, like his brother is well respected in the locker room and in the community.

My vote for who the better player of the two is Henrik Sedin. I base my vote on the fact that centre is a more difficult position to play because of having more defensive responsibilities and face-offs. Henrik is the more durable player that I know will be there every night. I also factor is that we know that Henrik is a very good player without Daniel, but we don't know how good Daniel is without Henrik.

Who do you think is the better player?

That's a wrap.

Ian
