In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the six-year, $24.6 million contract extension ($4.1M per) Brian Dumoulin signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

I like Dumoulin but I think the Penguins paid him a little bit too much on this deal.
Dumoulin can skate, and is strong defensively, but he brings next to nothing to the table in terms of offensive production (over the last two years Luke Schenn, Brooks Orpik, Kris Russell, Dan Girardi and Johnny Oduya, among others, have more 5v5 points). Generally, longer term deals can help keep the price down -- especially for restricted free agents -- but I don't really think that happened here.
It's not a disaster of a contract by any means but I don't see how the Penguins will get value. I think in a best case scenario he continues to hold his own as a 2nd pairing guy and is worth ~$4 million but, again, I don't envision a scenario where I think to myself Dumoulin is making less than he should be.

The deal is fair based on the length as the Penguins are buying down some later years and paying more across the board. Dumoulin presents as a capable 2nd pair player that does not score much but is effective at defensive side of the game. What are those types of players worth?
That answer is dependant on the needs and desperation of each team who seeks a defender like Dumoulin. In this case the Penguins are keeping something together and may have put a little more overall in the players hands but this should not be a deal that hurts them if the player performs to expectations and that is a reasonable expectation to have.
