In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Jaden Schwartz' five-year, $5.35 million (per) contract extension with the St. Louis Blues.

I love this deal for the Blues.
As a 21, 22 and 23 year old Jaden Schwartz managed to produce 61 points per 82 games played.
What is even more encouraging is that a lot of his production has come at 5 v 5. Over the same three-year span Schwartz is tied for 19th in the NHL averaging 2.14 points per 60 minutes of 5 v 5 play.
Some of the many names he has been a more efficient scorer than: Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Toews, Johnny Gaudreau and Nikita Kucherov, to name but a few.
On top of his point production the Blues controlled 54.5% of the shot attempts with him on the ice and 60%(!!) of the goals over the last three years. Without him they have still posted good numbers but with Schwartz they have been downright elite.
Even if he has reached his ceiling, and I doubt he has, he is more than worth the $5.35 million.

Given the comparables and the upside I think it is an outstanding deal for St. Louis. The dollar value is really good considering he is a 20-30 player, and it takes him up to the age of 29 when the Blues can properly re-evaluate his contributions before getting into the dreaded 30+ years with a player on the hard decline. We have seen a ton of players get overpaid in that range, and St. Louis has locked up a great young talent right up to that point. Not to mention they avoided arbitration. Good work from Blues management.
