For me it's David Backes' deal with the Boston Bruins and I'm not sure it's close.

Backes is already 32 years of age and is showing signs of decline as his goal totals have dropped in consecutive years. Backes' ability to drive possession is not what it used to be, either.

Committing five years to a 32-year-old isn't a great idea to begin with but that's especially true with power forwards as they don't tend to age well.

I think this contract is really going to hurt the Bruins.

Boy there were a couple.

Pick your poison.

In general the amount of huge contracts given out with longer terms to players that are 30+ was insane. The decline for an NHL player starts around 26, and hits high gear at 30.

The Backes contract is insane from that regard. They are basically going to be paying a ton of money for a 3C.

The Lucic one is also insane because in two years Lucic's production is probably going to degrade to a point where his cost is way exceeding his value. Maybe they get two good years out of him, but he is still signed for 5 more years after that.

Another bad one was the Vancouver signing of Eriksson. Not because Eriksson is a bad player, but because the Canucks are in NO way a team that will compete next year. Maybe not even for a playoff spot with the way their roster is constructed. Yet they still went out and plopped down money on an aging free agent instead of gearing up more for the future or taking a shot at some younger talent.

James Tanner

I think a lot of term was handed out today that teams will regret down the road, however, Lucic, Okposo and Eriksson will all be worth their cap hits for the first couple years of their deals, so I don't think they're as bad as some people make them out to be.

A $4.5 million cap hit for Troy Brouer was pretty dumb. Also, a $6 million cap hit for David Backes is equally dumb. Other than that, whoever signs Kris Russell probably made the worst deal.

Peter Tessier

Pick your poison, it all depends on what you want to kill yourself with. Lucic is Hemlock, Okposo is warfarin, and Ladd is crack. You sable with the devil but he always wins.

That being said that's what the UFA DAY is all about. This isn't about who lost but who really costs their team the most and in this case it's what flavor you like and I only listed three.
