In this edition of the hotstove we share our thoughts on Brayden Schenn's four-year, $5.125 million (per) extension with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Todd Cordell

The $5.125 million per seems a little rich for Schenn but I don't mind the deal because of the term.

At 24 Schenn is just about to enter his prime and this deal will take him through it (or come very close to doing so).

He's not a great 5 v 5 point producer nor is he a play driver. That said, he has averaged 54 points per 82 games over the last two seasons and also brings a physical presence to the lineup.

I don't think there's much potential for Philly to get real value out of this deal but I really can't see Schenn significantly underperforming, either.

James Tanner

It's an OK deal because it locks up a decent player through most of the rest of his prime at an OK price.

Still, for the team it would have been nicer to go another two years in exchange for going into the fives on salary.

Kadri and Killorn's contracts are both for longer and cheaper, and they are both significantly better players. So while I don't hate this contract, it probably could have been more team-friendly.

Jason Lewis

I know they are paying for potential, but that's an AWFUL lot to pay for a player that is looking more and more like he might cap out as a 3rd liner.

This feels similar to the Mike Richards extension after the great 07-08 season he had. That contract ended up coming back to hurt Philly/Los Angeles. However the good part here is the term.

It's expensive, but he'll be off the books in a few years. Still, it seems like a really high cap hit all things considered. Not sure I like this move entirely for the Flyers.
