Hate to start with such a sad note, but Jeff Marek of CBC is reporting that "former Sabre/Blue Kevin O'Shea has passed away. The family wants to get the word out to the hockey community so ex-teammates know."

Very sad. My prayers are with Kevin's family, friends, and loved ones.

Back to the Rumor Mill....

I will tell you this much. It is getting very interesting as teams are now starting to look at this season as having two trade deadlines. One February 12th pre Olympics, and one on March 3rd.

One source told me he expects Feb 12th to be "insane almost to the point of the standard deadline" and many feel the March 3rd date, just a few days post-Olympics, could have more the feel of a typical UFA day frenzy, with teams working out deals over the Olympic Break and then rushing them together in a chaotic 36-72 hours.

Sounds like fun to me!

The rumor mill is abuzz today with the Wild placing Petr Sykora and Robbie Earl on waivers.

All sorts of speculation out there as to if the Wild may or may not have a trade that they are finalizing. I did confirm that the Wild are not in on Ilya Kovalchuk.

That list is still pretty much Philly, Boston, LA, Vancouver, Chicago, and Montreal.

The Lecavalier rumors to the Rangers don't appear to have legs to them. At least from the people I am talking to so far. I will have a better feel later tonight after talking to some closer sources.

Ray Whitney to the Kings or the Canucks is gaining a lot of steam. People who once felt Whitney had no intention of leaving are now saying he will go so he can help the Canes out. Were he to be traded, I would not be shocked to see him return to Carolina this summer as a UFA. He loves the area.

The NJ Devils are apparently NOT on Scott Niedermayer's short list. I am a little surprised by that. However, Vancouver, Philly Washington, are...

The Devils are expected to make a play for Teemu Selanne however as are the Montreal Canadiens who have tried for several years now to land the Finnish Flash.

Tonight, Ray Emery will once again get a shot in goal as Philly hosts Columbus (a game I am heading to now) Emery did not look healthy or sharp in the one he has played since returning from injury.

The Canadiens are in the market for a big time D-man, and rumors are that they are in on Souray as well as Hannan out of Colorado.

The Leafs and Has are still looking deeply at Cogliano and a third team only told to me as "a team from the Southeast" also is looking at Cogs.

more to come from the Wachovia Center in a bit.
