Thoughts on Bryz and Bob.. New Projected Standings

As has been reported, Sergei Bobrobsky will get the start tonight for the Flyers in place of the injured Ilya Bryzgalov who has a chip fracture in his foot which isn't too serious according to all sources. Given the wide array of medical opinions I have heard about this injury, it is safe to say chip fractures are not an exact science. Some just absorb and get better within a few weeks, some linger for eight weeks. They are painful, but playable, and professional hockey players likely play with these more often than we realize.

My opinion... Play Bob for the next week and don't rush Bryzgalov back at all. While, the Flyers are in a battle for home ice with the Penguins, the Flyers wold prefer the Penguins have home ice were it to mean the Flyers get a healthy Bryzgalov.

The bigger issue here is Bryzgalov's play "away" from the puck. I have heard reports this injury occurred during warm ups when Bryzgalov wasn't focused on the play...warms don't concern me, and this was likely a freak thing. I get that. What does concern me is what I have noticed since day one with Bryzgalov...during the games I have rarely seen a goalie more nonchalant when the play is going on away from him than Bryzgalov is. I was a goalie and I was trained to follow the play all over the ice. To be ready for weird shots or odd plays all the time. To get into the set position and move to the side where the puck is the second it crosses the opponents blue line. To follow the puck around the net even when it is carried by your own player....see the Tampa goal from the other night. It was a mistake by Carle to be sure. But Bryzgalov wasn't paying attention either. Had he been, he could have erased the mistake with relative ease. Sure it is only one goal, but that loss could prove the difference between home ice, and not home ice.
