Quick Hits: April 22, 2024

1) Flyers Daily: On the weekly "Mondays with Meltzer" edition of the Flyers Daily podcast, host Jason Myrtetus and I begin to deconstruct the Flyers' 2023-24 season and start looking ahead to the offseason agenda. This week, we discuss head coach John Torotrella and general manager Daniel Briere's media sessions this past Friday. We speak frankly about the team's power play woes and the plan to form a collaborative intra-organization group of advisors to work this summer in conjunction with Rocky Thompson (neither Jason nor I are particularly optimistic about that alone making a big difference in the bottom line). Jason and I also revisit some pivotal moments that mattered in 2023-25 and start a discussion on how the Flyers can take another step forward this offseason to prepare for 2024-25.

2) On PhiladelphiaFlyers.com, look for a preview article tied to the upcoming Lehigh Valley Phantoms vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins playoff series. I will post the link when the article goes live. Additionally, Brian Smith and I will review the 2023-24 regular season and look ahead to the upcoming playoff series on a new Prospect Pipeline podcast. The best-of-three series starts Wednesday evening in Wilkes-Barre. Game 2 will be at the PPL Center on Friday. If necessary, Game 3 will be in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.

3) Today in Flyers History: April 22, 2008

Joffrey Lupul's power play goal at 6:06 of sudden death overtime lifts the Flyers to a 3-2 road win over the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the 2008 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal. Scottie Upshall and Sami Kapanen scored in regulation, while Nicklas Bäckström and Alex Ovechkin answered for Washington. Martin Biron stopped 39 of 41 shots to send the Flyers' onward to play the Montreal Canadiens in the second round. Cristobal Huet (31 saves on 34 shots) took the loss in the deciding game.
