QUICK HITS: JULY 9, 2017

1) Sunday is the final "regular" on-ice day of the Flyers Development Camp. On Monday, there won't be any on-ice work but the attendees will take part in off-ice sessions. Tuesday afternoon will see the third annual 3-on-3 tournament that concludes the on-site portion of the camp in Voorhees. The following day is the Trial on the Isle in Stone Harbor, NJ.

Readers have sometimes asked why the Flyers no longer hold a full scrimmage on the final day of camp. The reason, quite simply, is that it didn't make sense to keep do it. Players were a little too eager to try to impress and there were injuries a meaningless scrimmage, In the 2012 scrimmage for example, there were at least two players who sustained concussions after receiving overzealous body checks.

The 3-on-3 is fun for the players and spectators but, while still competitive among the participants, is clearly not "game simulation" conditions. It's been a nice addition to the camp.

2) Later today on the Flyers' official site, there will be an article I wrote on Tanner Laczynski. A fast-riser after being selected in the sixth round of the 2016 Draft, Laczynski beat out more hyped prospects (including Max Jones) for a spot on gold-medal winning Team USA at the World Junior Championships and enjoyed a strong freshman season at Ohio State. He wants to continue to improve his skating and stamina -- if he can add a half-stride of explosiveness, he will really be onto something because otherwise has the tools to eventually be a pro.

3) Flyers fans who want to participate in any of the four events at the Toyota Flyers Charity Classic on July 16 (5k run/walk, 10k family or individual bike ride, 50k bike ride, or 100k bike ride) can still sign up online for a few more days. Seven of the teams are captained by Flyers Alumni, and are open to the public:

Ides of Marsh: Captained by Brad Marsh, who is doing the 100k bike ride, the team contains many members of the Marsh family. Other members include Joe Watson, Neil Little, veteran Flyers beat writer Wayne Fish and yours truly.

Briere Bunch: Captained by Danny Briere.

Bernie's Italian-French Connection: Co-captained by Bernie Parent and wife Gini.

Propper Guffaw: Captained by Brian Propp.

Lappy's Team: Captained by Ian Laperriere, who is doing the 100k bike ride and used it as motivation to rehab off-season knee surgery.

The Hands of Cement: Captained by Bill Clement. Bill has been posting some good musical playlists daily on his Twitter and Facebook pages to pump up for a brisk 5k walking/running pace.

Holmgren's Heroes: Captained by Paul Holmgren. I believe that Homer also selected the longest-distance bike ride as his event. But participants need not do the same event as the captain of their team if they choose an existing team (whether captained by Flyers Alum or not). Registrants can also start their own team or participate as individuals.
