The Flyers officially announced yesterday that the annual Flyers Wives Carnival at the Wells Fargo Center will take place earlier than usual this season. The 40th edition of the carnival will be held on November 6, 2016 this year. More commonly, the event has been held in February.

Coincidentally, at the same time the news went public, I was in the Flyers Archives doing photographic research on Carnivals of the past; activities that were once but no longer part of the event (such as a haircutting/ hair styling station), Carnival staples through the years (such as the dunk tank, which not even franchise icons Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber could -- or would have asked to -- beg off from donning a wet suit and sitting on the dunk tank platform), familiar faces through the years, etc. There were hundreds of photos taken every year, the vast majority of which have never been published.

The hours passed quickly. It sure didn't feel like "work", even if the purpose of the visit was for writing-related research and to pull an assortment of accompanying photos.

Below is the text of the Flyers' press release:

In advance of the Philadelphia Flyers 50th anniversary season, the club announced [on August 16, 2016] that its annual Flyers Wives Carnival will take place on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Center. This marks the 40th year of the fan-favorite Carnival, one of the longest-tenured and most successful charity events hosted by a professional sports franchise in the country.

Tickets to the Flyers Wives Carnival go on sale today at FlyersCarnival.com, by phone at 1-800-298-4200, or at the Wells Fargo Center Box Office.

The Carnival provides the unique opportunity for fans to meet and take pictures with their favorite Flyers players, collect autographs, play interactive games, and take part in family-friendly activities. Last year’s carousel will return to center ice and accompany fan favorites on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center, including the six-story-high Ferris wheel, carnival games and booths, tailgate games with players, and meet-and-greets with Flyers players and alumni.

This year, several player combination autograph/photograph booths will be available for purchase in advance, including Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, Shayne Gostisbehere, and Wayne Simmonds.

Early Admission tickets to the Carnival are $35 in advance and will allow fans to enter the building at 1:30 p.m. General Admission opens at 3 p.m. and is $20 for adults. Tickets for children 12 and under are $15. Children under 2 are free. Event parking is free.

Proceeds from the Flyers Wives Carnival allow Flyers Charities to assist many local beneficiaries such as the Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Pennsylvania, Police Athletic League, and many others. Since its inception, Flyers Charities has contributed over $26 million to various charitable organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Region.
