Kings and Oilers swap veterans

The Los Angeles Kings acquired Jussi Jokinen from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Mike Cammalleri on Tuesday night.

In the 14 games Jokinen has played this season he only has one assist and a plus/minus of -3. The 34-year-old is signed to the end of the year with a $1.1 million cap hit and has a limited no-trade clause where he can pick three teams he can refuse to go to.

The 35-year-old Cammalleri returned to the L.A. Kings, the team that drafted him in 2001, when he signed a one year deal worth $1 million in the offseason. Playing on a line with Nick Shore and Trevor Lewis for the majority of the season, Cammalleri scored three goals and seven points in 15 games.

This seems like a move that is more about fit than skill. Jokinen can play all three forward positions which allows head coach John Stevens some flexibility in his line up. As well, Jokinen is decent in the faceoff circle, winning 51% of his draws.

The point total has been there in the past, it was only two seasons ago that he scored 18 goals and 60 points with the Florida Panthers.

Cammalleri seems to be on a tour of his career as he returns to the province of Alberta for the second time, this time with the Oilers. To be able to put Cammalleri on Ryan Strome's wing on the third line might help the 24-year-old tap into his potential that the Oilers were hoping to get when they traded Jordan Eberle for him.
