Would you do this deal?

In a recent column, Buffalo News writer Bucky Gleason proposed a deal that would send Avs center Paul Stastny to Buffalo. Below is the deal Gleason proposed.

Hey, guess what? The Avalanche don't have a first-round pick this weekend.

The Avs already have restricted free agents in Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly ahead of Stastny and both make considerably less money. They don't need to pay a third-line center $6.6 million, which means Stastny is expendable.

OK, how about a first-round pick and Roy or Sekera? Not good enough? How about a first-round pick and Roy and Sekera? It's almost too good for the Avalanche to pass up, which is by design. My goal is creating enough cap room for Stastny. Roy and Sekera count for $6.75 million against the cap.

Sekera will make $3.25 million this season and played well during the world championships. But, really, they can have him. Tyler Myers, Christian Ehrhoff, Jordan Leopold, Brayden McNabb, Alexander Sulzer, Robyn Regehr and Mike Weber provide a sound blend of skill and toughness along the blue line.

And I'm not finished.

I'm asking Miller for a list of teams with which I can negotiate. If a deal can be reached, it could help all parties involved and allow me to create enough space to make an honest attempt at signing Parise or Stoll. Otherwise, I'll keep Miller and pray he rediscovers the form he had in the second half of last season.

For both the Sabre and Avs fans, would you do that? From the Avs side of things this is tempting. Roy is a small forward capable of 50-60 points a year, 20-25 goals and Sekera is a stay at home defenseman, adding to the Avs' depth there, just in case injuries strike.

The Avs would also get the 12th overall selection in this year's draft. While the 2012 draft doesn't appear deep, the first round, specifically the first 15 picks look very solid. The Avs could use that pick on Tom Wilson, the big forward who can score, something the Avs could really use in the coming years.

For this the Avs would only have to lose Stastny. Stastny is a 60-70 point per year player and a good defensive-minded player. He makes a decent penny at $6.6 million per year with two years remaining on the deal.

Stastny to Thomas Vanek alone would increase the Sabre's goal scoring ability. Meanwhile the Avs get another forward who can play center or wing and, assuming he can stay healthy, is capable of being a 20 goal scorer with speed.

Is this a fair deal or is this a reporter just going wild and crazy?
