Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz has resigned his position as the Capitals head coach, according to Elloitte Friedman.

If you continue reading the thread, Freidman reveals that Trotz had a two year extension triggered by winning the Cup, but that it was far below market value and they failed to renegotiate.

As Friedman says, this is a bit of a surprise because it was thought that Trotz was a free agent. But other than that, there is nothing surprising about this.

Trotz was thought to be leaving after the Playoffs, and no one in their right mind thought the Capitals were winning the Cup so it was almost a forgone conclusion.

Rumours surfaced recently that he'd stay, but many remained skeptical.

I mean, if they don't want you, they don't want you. It was a bit of an awkward situation, one assumes.

Who will be the Caps next coach?

Where Will Trotz go next?

(Edmonton. There is no way Edmonton can return with the same coach GM combo they had last year. Trotz will go to Edmonton).

I will guess that the next coach of the Capitals will be Iron Mike Keenan. Just kidding. But I love all the new blog possibilities.

Personally, I am not a huge Trotz fan, but he will certainly be in high demand on the open market. Are you as pumped as I am about the impending free agency tour?

I will keep you updated as news breaks. (And if it doesn't, then up next: a Mike Keenan bio)!
