ROSTER DEADLINE DAY 2017
All NHL teams must submit their opening-night rosters to the league today. The Flyers, who departed yesterday for San Jose, placed veteran forward Matt Read on waivers. The move is a result of the upper-body injury (possibly a concussion) sustained by defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere in the third period of Sunday's preseason finale against the New York Islanders.
By virtue of Read being waived, it appears that Gostisbehere's condition is not bad enough to necessitate him being placed on injured reserve. However, both Sam Morin and Travis Sanheim made the trip to California with the team.
The Flyers are not obligated to assign Read to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms when/if he clears waivers today. However, as long as the team is carrying eight defensemen on the active roster, it cannot carry more than 13 forwards. Once Gostisbehere is cleared to play, the likely course of action is for one of Sanheim or Morin to be assigned to the AHL and for Read to be restored to the NHL roster.

line-by-line preview of the Flyers' potential forward combinations for opening night in San Jose on Wednesday. The article was written prior to the Read waiver news, and he is included among the forward options (actually, he's still officially part of the roster unless either claimed off waivers or reassigned). Part 2 of the article, looking at the defense and goaltenders, will run later today.
