ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reported earlier in the week that the next few games will determine if the Dallas Stars will be sellers before the March 1 trade deadline.

Losses to Toronto on Tuesday and in Ottawa on Thursday put the Stars eight points in back of Nashville and Los Angeles for the final Western Conference wild card spot.

THE BUZZ – The Stars are fading fast and the priest should be called for the last rites.

If one play defines the Dallas season, it was Jiri Hudler’s own goal against the Senators on a delayed penalty.

Injuries, the loss of veteran defensemen Jason Demers and Alex Goligoski to free agency, the departure of youngster Valeri Nichushkin to the KHL and subpar goaltending from Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi have all contributed to their downfall.

Barring Dallas not losing a game between now and the deadline, the expiring contracts of Patrick Sharp, Lauri Korpikoski, Patrick Eaves, Jiri Hudler and possibly Johnny Oduya will be on the trade market, which should have an effect on the price that the Coyotes and Avalanche are asking for their rentals.

The Philadelphia Flyers are fighting for a wild card spot in the East(currently one point behind Boston and two points behind Toronto), but have a trio of unrestricted free agent defensemen in Michael Del Zotto, Nick Schultz and Mark Streit.

According to Flyers beat reporter Dave Issac, GM Ron Hextall may want to retain some veteran presence on the blueline, but the others will likely be shopped to clubs looking for defensive depth heading into the playoffs.

THE BUZZ – Philadelphia is in a position of being both buyers and sellers before March 1.

Hextall will likely have many interested parties if he decides to move veterans Streit or Del Zotto before the deadline, and has young prospects Samuel Morin, Travis Sanheim and Robert Hagg playing in the AHL.

The Flyers do need to add scoring help up front with rookie Travis Konecny out four-to-six weeks and could move one of their blueliners for a forward.
