ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the St. Louis Blues are exploring sign and trade options for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk.

“I think St. Louis would be open to that kind of scenario under the right circumstances. But I’ve yet to hear of a single team that has actually contacted the Blues about it. Sources around the league indicate that all the clubs that have talked to St. Louis are interested more in a rental scenario for the defenseman.

"Because of the flat-cap fear," said one Eastern Conference team executive.

So many teams are hamstrung by the cap already, and offering $7 million a year to the 28-year-old blueliner would be a huge commitment to make before next season’s financial landscape is fully clear.”

THE BUZZ – The sign-and-trade option may be a sign of the Blues desperation, since they are not getting the type of return they hoped to get for Shattenkirk as a rental.

With the 2017 Draft appearing to be subpar, contending teams are likely willing to move their first round pick, but not top prospects who are inexpensive assets for one-to-three years.

The question is whether Shattenkirk and his agent would be on board. In July, the free agent would be able to talk to 29 teams and get a bidding war generated, while a sign-and-trade would mean negotiating with a small group of teams.

Colorado is one of the few teams that will be moving everything not nailed down before March 1, which includes pending UFA’s Rene Bourque, Fedor Tyutin and Jarome Iginla.

According to Terry Frei of the Denver Post, the future Hall of Famer is looking for one last shot at a Stanley Cup.

“Iginla recently indicated to Colorado general manager Joe Sakic that he would prefer to be dealt to a contending team before the March 1 NHL trading deadline. That makes his no-trade clause academic.”

THE BUZZ – Iginla’s no-trade clause may not be a hurdle any longer, but his $5.33 Million salary may prevent the Avs from getting a good return. Colorado can retain up to 50% of his salary (as they did enforcer Cody McLeod), but will a contending team be interested in the future Hall-of-Famer, who is slowing down and has six goals in 48 games??
