There is an old saying that you hear associated with sports that goes something like this, “it wasn’t as close as the score indicated.” In the case of last night’s 9-2 Predators win over Toronto… that old saying holds… it really wasn’t that close. After hanging three goals on Jonathan Bernier in the first period the Maple Leafs changed goalies… the Preds then proceeded to hang a six spot on James Reimer and tied the franchise record for most goals in a game… Nine goals on 37 shots to complete a 9-2 rout of the Maple Leafs.

Give the Leafs credit… they came out in the second period with a new goaltender and rocked the Predators back a bit. From swapping their goaltender to the fight between Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf and Paul Gaustad, the appropriate levers were pulled and the team did respond. They just couldn’t crack Pekka Rinne in the second… and by the time they did… it was all over but the shouting and stupid questions from the Toronto media. A member of the Toronto media actually asked a player if the Leafs were trying to get their coach fired. Really?

And they wonder why Phil Kessel doesn’t want to talk to them… there’s blood in the water in Toronto, this is not going to end well. Not that the pressure isn’t earned, the Leafs have shown a habit of not showing up for games, but the insanity of the media in the mecca of hockey could be a contributing factor to this team’s lack of success... the lack of perspective drives some really strange decision making. For Leafs fans, you have to hope that GM Brendan Shanahan stays cool in this and takes the long view to get this franchise back where it belongs. It wasn’t broken overnight… it can’t be fixed quickly.

The Nashville Predators leave TO with a win streak, momentum and first place in the Central. They come off a game where only five roster players didn’t post a point to the scoresheet and two of them were goaltenders. The power play got a goal, going 1 for 4 last night and the penalty kill was perfect. All great indicators… now… The Preds head to Canada’s capital to complete the season series against the Ottawa Senators tomorrow night before returning to Smashville for American Thanksgiving.

Here are the highlights from nhl.com…

Random Notes

- The Predators tied their franchise record for most goals in a game at nine.

- Usually Jonathan Bernier owns the Preds… another goaltender hex banned!

- Gotta give Leafs radio guy Joe Bowen credit… his comment at the beginning of the second period last night “If you joined us late, congratulations.”

- Alas the dry scrape… I knew it well… the NHL says bye-bye on Saturday

- Think last night’s blowout may get the attention of the traditional hockey media? Nah… me either…

- Note to TSN… Nashville and St. Louis are competing for the Central lead. Chicago is not in the mix… yet.

- Taylor Beck had a career game last night… including taking one off the chest, then depositing the carom into the net between his legs… nice!

- Somebody break up the Sabres… they’ve won two straight!

- Five feet of snow in Buffalo… unbelievable! Keep warm you guys… hope you dig out soon!

- Two games tonight… Flyers @ Rangers and Canucks @ Oilers.
